Paterno Legacy [review of Jay's book]
philly.com ^ | 8-6-14 | Stan Hochman

IN HINDSIGHT, Joe Paterno wrote, the day after he got fired with a phone call, he wished he had done more. He had not committed a crime, he had not witnessed a crime, he had reported what sounded like a crime to his superiors.

The haters jumped all over that sentence, like it was some kind of a confession that the legendary Penn State football coach had somehow enabled Jerry Sandusky to sexually abuse those kids, while he looked the other way.

The haters spent a lot less time debating the note he scribbled on a pad before going to the hospital, where he died, the note that said, "Maybe the silver lining in this is that some good can come of this."

Jay Paterno says those are the words people should focus on. Says it in his new book, "Paterno Legacy."

It is an honor-thy-father book, describing JoePa's values, his work ethic, his philosophy that you could have big-time football success with honor. It's got some inside-football in it, some humor in it, some hard truths.

The publisher would set deadlines for certain chapters and Jay turned them in ahead of schedule. The publisher blinked in disbelief because writers who turn in manuscripts ahead of schedule are unicorn-rare.

"I told them," Jay said yesterday, "that that is the way I was raised. As a son, as a player, as a coach. Get to a meeting 10 minutes early."

JoePa would have been proud of that. And happy that the portrait Jay paints includes some warts. You could fill two shelves with articles and books about JoePa, that read like nominations for sainthood.

"He would say all the time," Jay recalled, "I wish I was half as good as they make me out to be."

“Dottie? Is she the woman that looked the other way while the coach had a sleepover with a little boy in the basement?”

The same one that slept alone while he was molesting their adopted children.

I am sure that a few fans were kept in the dark.

That was my recollection as well. It’s a good thing she was there to chaperone the coach on his Alamo Bowl date with a little boy.

There was an element that wanted Paterno to retire and when he wouldn't do so voluntarily, they engineered this scenario to put all the blame on Paterno so he would have to leave.

Not all of the thugs are in the White House.

“Ironically the actual V2 has said nothing happened in the shower that night. No wonder the OAG didn’t want him to testify.”

Originally, the defense wanted to use him as a character witness but just before the trial they decided it wouldn’t be in their interest.

“Why would Joe (or ANYONE at PSU) cover up for a pedophile?”

That is exactly the question everyone wants answered, because it is exactly what happened

For the fiftieth time, the lead prosecutor (Frank Fina) said unequivocally that he didn’t find evidence to support that supposed fact of yours.

Keep repeating it to yourself though, if it makes you believe it’s true.

WRT to the Joe Must Go crowd at PSU...

There is more truth to that than you want to believe. Google “Vic Surma” and “Joe Paterno” and learn something.

They didn’t engineer anything, but John Surma most certainly exacted his revenge for his nephew when the opportunity arose. Thank God US Steel stock holders are rid of this piece of human debris.

Keep deluding yourself. College athletics is rife with corruption and has been for a long time. Drugs, rapes and all manner of crime ignored, covered up. I live in SEC land and it is probably worse here than anywhere. Your idol though, was complicit in crimes against children. There is no ignoring it for anyone who isn’t blind. Joe Pa was most interested in his legacy first, the institution second and all else be damned

Because they quit looking. JP said he would cooperate and then he up and died ...

” I live in SEC land and it is probably worse here than anywhere. “

I went to FSU and UofF. Both schools have shoved Miami to the sidelines.

"Your idol though, was complicit in crimes against children."

This is nothing but your opinion - expressed as fact. Not a very conservative trait.

Joe isn't my idol. My Dad is. But there are thousands of lives that are better today because of Joe Paterno. Neither you, nor I can lay the same claim.

See what Jimmy Cefalo had to say about Joe. Note the fact that he (a media veteran) said he'd only agree to do "live" interviews because he didn't want to be edited. Says a lot.

Cefalo on Joe

” Google “Vic Surma” “

I did and was surprised to find that he once lived in Sandusky’s basement!

“Joe followed procedure. Period.”

So if you were in his shoes you would have done the same and allowed the pedophile to continue to operate at PSU facilities?

Vic Jr. was a walk-on receiver that didn’t get any playing time under Joe, and apparently didn’t (along w/ his family) handle it very well.

He went sideways and wound up a gay dancer/prostitute in Miami. He just recently died of a heroin overdose in NY.

Again, MM testified that he never saw JS w/ second mile kids on campus after the 2001 incident.

What part of this aren’t you understanding?

The recent players (Mauti, Zordich, etc.) at the time didn’t even know who JS was. This was detailed in John Bacon’s book 4th and Long. It was also detailed in Posnanski’s Paterno book.

Was Sandusky involved with Vic Jr?
