Paterno Legacy [review of Jay's book]
philly.com ^ | 8-6-14 | Stan Hochman

Posted on 08/06/2014 7:34:38 AM PDT by FlJoePa

IN HINDSIGHT, Joe Paterno wrote, the day after he got fired with a phone call, he wished he had done more. He had not committed a crime, he had not witnessed a crime, he had reported what sounded like a crime to his superiors.

The haters jumped all over that sentence, like it was some kind of a confession that the legendary Penn State football coach had somehow enabled Jerry Sandusky to sexually abuse those kids, while he looked the other way.

The haters spent a lot less time debating the note he scribbled on a pad before going to the hospital, where he died, the note that said, "Maybe the silver lining in this is that some good can come of this."

Jay Paterno says those are the words people should focus on. Says it in his new book, "Paterno Legacy."

It is an honor-thy-father book, describing JoePa's values, his work ethic, his philosophy that you could have big-time football success with honor. It's got some inside-football in it, some humor in it, some hard truths.

The publisher would set deadlines for certain chapters and Jay turned them in ahead of schedule. The publisher blinked in disbelief because writers who turn in manuscripts ahead of schedule are unicorn-rare.

"I told them," Jay said yesterday, "that that is the way I was raised. As a son, as a player, as a coach. Get to a meeting 10 minutes early."

JoePa would have been proud of that. And happy that the portrait Jay paints includes some warts. You could fill two shelves with articles and books about JoePa, that read like nominations for sainthood.

"He would say all the time," Jay recalled, "I wish I was half as good as they make me out to be."

I love Slaten. I used to listen to him just to hear him badmouth Tony LaRussa (Cards train here in Jupiter).

Slaten has been fired from probably a dozen jobs for spouting conservative (racist) views.

He’s great.

TL fell asleep drunk here in Jupiter a few years back. At a red light. Slaten ruined him.

You never answered my question - a simple yes or no.

Does anyone know more about this case than John Ziegler?

Yes or No.

Joe didn’t know about 1998. It actually would have been against the law for him to know about it.

...you have made this ridiculous assertion other times in your ramblings...along with your scurrilous besmirching of some of the victims...

...so, okay, I’ll take you up on it...in what possible regard would it have been illegal for Paterno to know about
the Sandusky investigation in 1998...?

...it would have been improper for him to intrude in the investigation, but that’s not what you’re claiming...

...and while we’re on the subject, in what possible world would it be illegal for anyone to know anything about any subject...imagine a cop saying ‘you there-you know about something that happened-you’re going to jail...’

...what a ridiculous premise you’ve put forth...

Joe Paterno when asked about the 1998 incident ....

“I don’t remember.”

...actually, when asked about this by the Grand Jury, after some uncomfortable moment, he ventured that he might have heard some rumors...

...I believe that Paterno was not informed of the exact nature of the Sandusky affair in ‘98, but he let the cat out of the bag with the rumor reference...but of course since the OP has assured us that Joe would’ve gone to jail if he had been informed, I guess there’s nothing else to talk about...

Given that I don’t know how much he knows there is no way I can answer the question. What I do know:

1. JP knew JS was a serial child molester.
2. JP enabled the serial child molester.
3. JP did nothing to help the molested children.

As a side note, your neighbor told me he saw you fondling your 12 year old daughter’s girlfriend. I told your wife about it...........Should I have gone to the cops too or left it up to your wife?

...sorry, terrible analogy...your neighbor (MM) would have had to inform you (JP) about a third party (JS)fondling the girl in order for your analogy to work...and further, the third party (JS) was only around due to your (JP) desire to have him around for thirty some odd years...so you (JP) do kind of have a stake in it...

Yes. He knew. Even if he didn’t know the exact nature, he knew enough and enabled the serial child molester to continue to operate using PSU facilities!

Then the 2001 incident! AGAIN he failed to due his moral duty for the child and enabled the serial child moleter to continue to operate for another decade!

I believe that serial child molester enablers should go to jail. Don’t you?

Don’t go to the cops. It is none of your business. After all, the 12 year old is learning the ropes from an older, more experienced person and will be better prepared for the future.

...I think you mistook my meaning...I was actually pointing out the nonsensical nature of the OP’s contention that it would have been illegal for Paterno to know about it...and that knowing about it would have landed him in jail...

...I, personally, don’t think Paterno willingly enabled Sandusky to go around buggering children...in this case, he reminds me more of the three monkeys, who see, hear, and speak no evil, due to confusion as to what his role actually should have been...and we must remember that the powers that were at PSU never dreamed this would ever be revealed to the public at large, and their reactions were based on that belief...

Hmmm. I am confused about my role in this. Speak up and send the child molester to prison or keep quiet and allow more children to be molested.

I am confused. Should I stand up for the children or keep my mouth shut.

Life is so confusing. I have better things to work on. We play Nebraska next week.

Let’s use some common sense here. It had to have been described to JP as an assault, or as a possible assault. Otherwise, JP would have just laughed it off. He would not have alerted his supervisors, or anybody else.

...he testified to the Grand Jury that it was something of a sexual nature...the OP and Curley and Schultz can call it horsing around all they want...but Paterno knew what it was...

JS didn’t molest any kids. It actually would have been against the law for him to do so.

“Let’s use some common sense here.”

Like the Athletic Department at colleges is a very powerful organization and the AD and ‘Coach’ are always informed of any misdeeds of their staff and players and most misdeeds are covered up ‘for the good of the team’.
