Paterno Legacy [review of Jay's book]
philly.com ^ | 8-6-14 | Stan Hochman

Posted on 08/06/2014 7:34:38 AM PDT by FlJoePa

IN HINDSIGHT, Joe Paterno wrote, the day after he got fired with a phone call, he wished he had done more. He had not committed a crime, he had not witnessed a crime, he had reported what sounded like a crime to his superiors.

The haters jumped all over that sentence, like it was some kind of a confession that the legendary Penn State football coach had somehow enabled Jerry Sandusky to sexually abuse those kids, while he looked the other way.

The haters spent a lot less time debating the note he scribbled on a pad before going to the hospital, where he died, the note that said, "Maybe the silver lining in this is that some good can come of this."

Jay Paterno says those are the words people should focus on. Says it in his new book, "Paterno Legacy."

It is an honor-thy-father book, describing JoePa's values, his work ethic, his philosophy that you could have big-time football success with honor. It's got some inside-football in it, some humor in it, some hard truths.

The publisher would set deadlines for certain chapters and Jay turned them in ahead of schedule. The publisher blinked in disbelief because writers who turn in manuscripts ahead of schedule are unicorn-rare.

"I told them," Jay said yesterday, "that that is the way I was raised. As a son, as a player, as a coach. Get to a meeting 10 minutes early."

JoePa would have been proud of that. And happy that the portrait Jay paints includes some warts. You could fill two shelves with articles and books about JoePa, that read like nominations for sainthood.

"He would say all the time," Jay recalled, "I wish I was half as good as they make me out to be."

Wikipedia?

Word is that a lot of Schultz’s notes are of what was asked of him by investigators (the pandora’s box reference). In other words, the state asked him if this was a “pandora’s box?”...and he took note of it.

Like I said - if they have such strong cases against GS/GS/TC, then please bring on the trial (they’re all tried together). With MM as the state’s star witness, I don’t see this happening though. And it’s been nearly 3 years.

And if you doubt me about Sue/Paul Kelly/Wick Sollers vs. the ncaa, you aren’t paying attention (and you don’t know their reputations). They don’t mess around and they don’t lose. They’re in discovery and the ncaa can’t find their ass w/ a compass.

They (Emmert) took away wins and specifically mentioned Joe in their ridiculous sanction display. Big mistake. Those wins are worth a lot of money. If the ncaa wants to settle (if I’m Paul Kelly), I’d say $500M, formal apology, reinstate wins, and mow Sue’s lawn for a year.

"JoePa chose the sanctity of the team and college football and Penn State over the protection of tortured children."

You make some decent comments, then let loose with this as if it is some sort of fact. This is apparently your opinion. It isn't a fact. The very premise makes no sense.

Joe hated tortured children! Joe knew! Joe covered up child rape for his football team!

WTF kind of person do you think Joe Paterno was?

“My overall take of the situation is that this is where the crack of generational ethics opened into a cavern, and Joe Pa fell into the hole.”

Joe was watching them dig the hole when he fell in.

“WTF kind of person do you think Joe Paterno was?”

An over-the-hill coach, too vain to leave?

A pedophile enabler?

Freeh report:

-----------------------------------------------------------

The most saddening finding by the Special Investigative Counsel is the total and consistent disregard by the most senior leaders at Penn State for the safety and welfare of Sandusky's child victims. As the Grand Jury similarly noted in its presentment,1 there was no "attempt to investigate, to identify Victim 2, or to protect that child or any others from similar conduct except as related to preventing its re-occurrence on University property." Four of the most powerful people at The Pennsylvania State University - President Graham B. Spanier, Senior Vice President-Finance and Business Gary C. Schultz, Athletic Director Timothy M. Curley and Head Football Coach Joseph V. Paterno - failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade. These men concealed Sandusky's activities from the Board of Trustees, the University community and authorities. They exhibited a striking lack of empathy for Sandusky's victims by failing to inquire as to their safety and well-being, especially by not attempting to determine the identity of the child who Sandusky assaulted in the Lasch Building in 2001. Further, they exposed this child to additional harm by alerting Sandusky, who was the only one who knew the child's identity, of what McQueary saw in the shower on the night of February 9, 2001. These individuals, unchecked by the Board of Trustees that did not perform its oversight duties, empowered Sandusky to attract potential victims to the campus and football events by allowing him to have continued, unrestricted and unsupervised access to the University's facilities and affiliation with the University's prominent football program. Indeed, that continued access provided Sandusky with the very currency that enabled him to attract his victims.

And with that revelation, it’s obvious you never accessed the Surma Vendetta link that I proved either.........

It is obvious that I did as I told you about how one of them had lived in Sandusky's basement and wondered if the pedophile ring was part of their vendetta.

The ‘state’ did not admit to asking him about ‘Pandora’s box’ ....

Exactly, when all this was found out about Sandusky in the late 90’s-early 2000’s JoePa was in the middle of his worst losing 4 season stretch ever, 26-34. People were clamoring for him to retire/be fired. If McCreary’s story had really gone public he’d have been gone.

The Freeh report isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.

Freeh didn’t speak to Joe, MM, TC, Schultz, JS, any of his victims. He spoke to Spanier (after GS practically demand they interview him), but didn’t include hardly any of his interview in the report.

All these lawsuits have really only one immediate goal - to get freeh into court to defend his report. Paterno vs NCAA has the best chances of this, imo.

BS. Freeh never got around to interviewing before he died. This is well documented. Stop telling lies.

“BS. Freeh never got around to interviewing before he died. This is well documented. Stop telling lies.”

The Paterno damning emails were not discovered till after his death.

BUT he could have volunteered to come forward ....

Freeh got caught in a lie. At the initial press conference, he claimed that Joe reached out to them and they were going to interview him.

At the grandstanding, ridiculous display he put on in Philadelphia, he had the balls to claim that Joe refused to cooperate with them. This is nothing but a lie.

Also, freeh never even approached Sue, Scott, or Jay.

Some investigation.
