Paterno Legacy [review of Jay's book]
philly.com ^ | 8-6-14 | Stan Hochman

Posted on 08/06/2014 7:34:38 AM PDT by FlJoePa

IN HINDSIGHT, Joe Paterno wrote, the day after he got fired with a phone call, he wished he had done more. He had not committed a crime, he had not witnessed a crime, he had reported what sounded like a crime to his superiors.

The haters jumped all over that sentence, like it was some kind of a confession that the legendary Penn State football coach had somehow enabled Jerry Sandusky to sexually abuse those kids, while he looked the other way.

The haters spent a lot less time debating the note he scribbled on a pad before going to the hospital, where he died, the note that said, "Maybe the silver lining in this is that some good can come of this."

Jay Paterno says those are the words people should focus on. Says it in his new book, "Paterno Legacy."

It is an honor-thy-father book, describing JoePa's values, his work ethic, his philosophy that you could have big-time football success with honor. It's got some inside-football in it, some humor in it, some hard truths.

The publisher would set deadlines for certain chapters and Jay turned them in ahead of schedule. The publisher blinked in disbelief because writers who turn in manuscripts ahead of schedule are unicorn-rare.

"I told them," Jay said yesterday, "that that is the way I was raised. As a son, as a player, as a coach. Get to a meeting 10 minutes early."

JoePa would have been proud of that. And happy that the portrait Jay paints includes some warts. You could fill two shelves with articles and books about JoePa, that read like nominations for sainthood.

"He would say all the time," Jay recalled, "I wish I was half as good as they make me out to be."

So were a lot of other people. George Bush named JS and the second mile one of his “Thousand Points of Light”.

“Again, MM testified that he never saw JS w/ second mile kids on campus after the 2001 incident.”

PSU allowed him access till the 2011 indictment. I, also, never saw JS with second mile kids on campus after the 2001 incident.

Correct - and that is on the b.o.t. and the administration, not Joe or the football program. As I posted (and the hand written note is actually in the freeh report), Joe protested JS’s access due to liability concerns.

Joe obviously loved his own kids. In that work environment, I get the feeling he didn’t want anyone else’s around.

The media got this so wrong that at one time, someone claimed that the two had offices next to each other. JS’s office (after his retirement) was in an entirely separate building about a 1/2 mile away.

But that doesn’t sell a story.

I did and was surprised to find that he once lived in Sandusky’s basement!

So what was the surprise and why is that relevant in your continued attacks against Paterno?

For the record, I found that info also but I also discovered that Mr. Surma definitely had a case of the ass against Paterno due to Paterno's exacting proper disciplinary actions against prior players.........discipline that Mr. Surma didn't care for and who obviously still harbors animosity against Paterno because of it.

Here's a link to his public rants.......

“The recent players (Mauti, Zordich, etc.) at the time didn’t even know who JS was. This was detailed in John Bacon’s book 4th and Long. It was also detailed in Posnanski’s Paterno book.”

He was referred to as ‘the old guy that worked out here’.

I compare this situation to the behavior of the Catholic Church when all their pedophile scandals were coming out. The Church did the best they could to keep a lid on it. They put the protection of their reputation ahead of bringing the perpetrators in their midst to justice.

However, like Nixon found out, the cover-up always has worse consequences than just coming clean.

Now most priests in the Catholic Church are good people who never committed a crime. Unfortunately however, their collective good name was besmirched due to the poor decisions of their leaders. And so it is with Penn State and Joe Paterno.

BTW, your rabid obsession with this football coach is more than a little creepy. Most of us would have forgotten about Paterno's involvement (or non-involvement) with Jerry Sandusky by now, and might eventually go back to remembering him as a good football coach, much like many of us now remember Pete Rose as a good ballplayer as opposed to a degenerate gambler, but you insist on keeping the controversy alive.

“The media got this so wrong that at one time, someone claimed that the two had offices next to each other. JS’s office (after his retirement) was in an entirely separate building about a 1/2 mile away.”

Are you implying that because it was 2640 feet away JP didn’t know about it?

"He was referred to as the old guy that worked out here"...

...correct, after they had to be reminded who he was.

“...correct, after they had to be reminded who he was. “

So your original post stating they didn’t know who he was was incorrect.

You can compare this to whatever your little heart desires. The fact is that Joe Paterno did nothing wrong.

Deal with it.

Much is detailed by quotes how the JP rule in recent years was a disaster.

Why don’t you ask questions about Vic Surma/John Surma? Peetz? Frazier? These are powerful people - much more powerful than Joe Paterno.

As I said, Mauti had to be reminded who JS was. My comment stands.

“The fact is that Joe Paterno did nothing wrong.”

He enabled a pedophile.

His last years were a disaster for PSU football program.

JP said he would cooperate and then he up and died ...

Sounds like you've got yourself caught up in a circle jerk of Paterno hatred. Of course JP said he would cooperate, no more or less than he already had and which FlJoePa continuously points out to you.........

I would rather be known as a sycophant for the support of Joe Paterno than a blind hate monger whose only real arguments are based on now proven innuendo and unsubstantiated information that was passed on by the MSM as fact.........

As a side note, your neighbor told me he saw you fondling your 12 year old daughter's girlfriend. I told your wife about it...........Should I have gone to the cops too or left it up to your wife?

And what if your neighbor was lying?

"Much is detailed by quotes how the JP rule in recent years was a disaster."

As you would expect the end of such an era to be. Jay was the real target though, not so much Joe.

Nothing was detailed about any involvement in pedophila enabling though. Go figure.

Bacon is a good, honest writer, as is Posnanski. They both know the truth. You apparently wouldn't accept it if they told it to your face.

IMPROPER

Improper?......LOL! Surma played how long and he's the arbiter of what is proper and what is not?

Like I said, someone has a case of the ass against Paterno........
