I’m looking to build, one-level, about 1500 sq ft for two of us and a few dogs, and one big-@ss pole barn for chickens, sheep, rabbits, goats, a milk cow, and an attached kennel for the Coon Hounds.
In fact, I MIGHT just build a big pole barn with about 500 sq ft of ‘living space’ and forget about a house altogether.
Now THAT’S livin’, Baby! :)
You are a hoot!!
Yep! And, as long as you have a water well and septic system....you are GOOD!
I’m right there with ya on this idea ;)
Yupsters would call that a “barn conversion”, you’re just talking about a modern-style barn. Why not?
I lived in a small camp in VT and I hate to clean. There are small cabins with a loft (3 bedroom) with a living room/kitchen area. Really sweet. I’d rather be outside anyway. It’s a matter of what we need as opposed to what we want. I’ll have a mansion to invite thousands of brothers and sisters to visit, later.

In “Going Galt” we went from our house in the DC suburbs to about a 1200 s.f. cabin in the mountains. But, my barn is about 7,000 s.f, and our other group of buildings is about a thousand s.f. Just about right, but still we wrestle with our several hundred boxes of books.
That particular movement is gaining momentum around here and across the river in W.Va.
Buy a few acres and build a large pole barn and then make a two story apartment in one corner. I know one guy locally who did that and made a wood working shop and garage in the rest. His real estate taxes are one fourth what mine are. When we sell a few more rental properties we are doing the same thing!
