I’ve learned a lot from the outpouring of reader response to my two recent columns — 64 clips of movies you can’t find on DVD and Even more clips (70, in fact) of flicks you can’t find on DVD — about movies you can’t find on DVD.

It might be the M for “Mature” audiences which was the old name for a rating of “PG”.

If only TCM had access to the Universal/Paramount library! That’s where most of my ‘wants’ lie. The 1930s Charlie Ruggles films, the early-1940s “Henry Aldrich” films, Universal’s pairings of ZaSu Pitts and Slim Summerville, the Dorothy Lamour sarong flicks, old oddities like Hecht-MacArthur’s “Soak the Rich” (1936), or Universal’s “Night World” (1932), both which I haven’t seen in decades. And where is “Miss Tatlock’s Millions” (1948)? Pretty funny movie, that’s fallen through the woodwork. Etc., etc., etc.

The War Lord IS available on DVD--IF you have a DVD player that will play Region 2, PAL standard DVDs.

I have a glorious German release.

These internationally friendly players have come way down in price. There is no reason for serious movie lovers not to have one. Frequently movies are tied up legally in one country but not another--these are NOT bootlegs, they just are issued elsewere. I have movies from all over the world.

THE WAR LORD is one of my favorite movies.

Questions? email me privately.

I have a copy of that! Region free out of Portugal. The titles are in portugese but the film is in English. First saw THE WAR LORD back in 1964.

When first shown on NBC TV back around 1970, they butchered it so bad I was not sure it was the same movie! Remember the censored movies on TV due to the murder of Bobby Kennedy in 1968,bu cutting out all violent scenes and re editing them.

After the murder of Bobby Kennedy it was feared that the government might regulate violence. TV shows for adults dumbed down to kiddy shows, comic books changed their formats, pocket books removed their lurid bloody and sexy covers.

But the Movie industry said they would regulate themselves with a code system. The Government backed off.
Hot digigy dog! The HAYS code is dead! If you got them make them!
Movies were reshot to ADD sex and violence. More blood and nudity flowed from the screens.
The first movie rating was G-M(mature)-R-X.
Then G-GP(the old “mature”)-R-X
Then G-PG-R-X
Now, G-PG-PG 13-R-NC 17.

Let me rephrase that. The TITLES ON THE COVER are Portugese, The DVD is in English. WIDESCREEN!

Every once in a while this is shown on STARZ movie channel. but not in Wide Screen.

Older movies will look horrible on DVD on modern TVs unless they are remastered.

Just ordered a DVD of the movie "The Wrong Box" with Michael Caine and Peter Sellers and a stellar cast of wacky British actors. I am really hoping it is a good edition as opposed to the VHS tape I got several years ago.

There are some old films going back to the early-1930s that look absolutely stunning, if top-notch source material survived and was used.

You are right, if they have the material to work with they can do a lot. I'm a huge fan of Hitchcock and what they've done with many of his movies is amazing.

Do you know what looks bad, though, on modern TVs? Television shows from the 1970s/80s that were shot on video-tape, like sitcoms and variety shows.

I've noticed that when flipping through channels and come across a show from when I was a kid only to see that it looks worse than ever.

The only movies I ever like Peter Sellers in were the "Pink Panther" series.

Have you ever seen his AFTER THE FOX? A funny movie about a criminal who escapes prison to protect his little sister Gina, who he finds is now grown up.
Steals movie equipment to cover for a stolen gold shipment, the scene in the court room when they show the “movie” he “made” in this movie is funny and sums up my thoughts on some French and Italian artsy movies.
As the film critic said... “BRAVO! BRAVO! I laughed, I cried! THAT MAN IS A GENIOUS!”

I've never seen it, but I looked it up. I may check it out on Netflix.

If only TCM had access to the Universal/Paramount library!

In the late 90s or early 2000s, there was an article in Variety which covered how "Turner" and other corporations that held vast film libraries were deliberately keeping some films off of home video to maintain some exclusive content for their paytv cable channels.

The other point of that article was that by withholding some films from market, there could still be "big releases" down the road.

However, the longer titles are withheld from the market, the fewer people exist who will care when they do come to market.

Since the 1980s I knew college students who wouldn't sit for a black and white movie. That number has only grown.

I've since run into persons who say they cannot watch any movie from about 1986 because they "are too slow".

The language of film is changing and not so much for the better.
