A Twin Cities man, already bloodied from one home invasion in far northern Minnesota, repeated the crime down the highway minutes later and attacked a 72-year-old woman before the victims son stepped in saying he did what had to be done and fatally shot the suspect, authorities said Monday.
The shooting occurred about 6 a.m. Saturday outside the house along Hwy. 53, roughly 4 miles east of Ray, Minn., according to the Koochiching County Sheriffs Office.
Im the son who did what had to be done, said Brad Himes, 48, who came to the rescue of his mother, Ethel, and shot Benjamin Beaudoin, 34, of Mendota Heights with a handgun.
Brad Himes said the family had never before seen Beaudoin, whose was in that part of the state to attending a wedding.
The son said his mother came through the incident fine physically, and were doing the best we can to get by. Bad things happen. We just want to get over it.
County Attorney Jeff Naglosky said his office has been briefed about the shooting and declined to say anything more as he awaits investigatory reports from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the St. Louis County medical examiners office.

The son REALLY needs to shut his mouth. He's already said too much to the authorities and it may come back to bite him.
If I came in and found someone assaulting my elderly Mom, they would die too.
But I know that you are smart enough to say nothing to the authorities that would be repeated in the press.
“They?” Both the intruder and your elderly mom? It would be better if just the intruder paid the ultimate price for his actions. The mindset of someone who would kill both is that of a Moslem.
Unfortunately for everyone involved the facts show otherwise.
Ray, MN where the Hoot Owls mate with the Chickens, Roosters or Hens makes no difference —— after all it’s Minnasnowta!
“They” can also be singular when used in such context, but you knew that.
Yep, defense of another would work here, all things else being equal, because even an unarmed man could easily kill an elderly woman, and that’s the threshold for responding with lethal force. Proportional response.
“Proportional response.”
Remember, this is Minnesota.
Backing up a bit...my Mom wouldn’t be the one answering the door.
And soon here comes the local media crying he should have called 911 .... and the son knows that the invader was unarmed and mentally ill. What, he should have the guy fill out a questionnaire before he attacks?????
I fully expect something similar...
They’re never “that kind of guy” until they are “that kind of guy”.
MN people always seem to favor the “downtrodden”, but that does not include victims of crime.
I hope the intruder suffered horribly and knew he was dying.
Would meet a bloody end swiftly...
In all fairness, it sounds like the invader was clearly insane, and I imagine the medical examiner is going to find some very interesting brain damage, maybe even a tumor, when he cracks open his skull.
And yes, it probably goes back to the “traumatic brain injury” he had as a teen. Severe migraines after a TBI are a major red flag, especially associated with an indeterminate “mental illness” and severe paranoia.
Bottom line: the people who defended themselves are blameless, the home invader likely had no control over his actions either.
And I would blame his family for letting him out on his own.
