Mount Rainier, one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the U.S. and in the world, is widely expected to erupt again.
The only unknown facing scientists is when the massive stratovolcano, 4,392 meters tall and located 87 kilometers southeast of Seattle in Washington state, will finally explode.
Scientists from the United States and Norway recently mapped the electric and magnetic signatures of magma flows beneath Mount Rainier (pronounced ray-near). Theyve also discovered a mammoth magma reservoir below the mountain that will fuel any eruption with massive magma flows.
The research found out that magma or fluid molten rock is trapped in a pool some eight kilometers below the peak. The pool seems to be some eight kilometers to 16 kilometers thick and has about the same width.

I thought obama would start healing the earth.
Go SEAHAWKS
(and we’re all gonna die)
I wonder if we’ll see the plume from San Diego?
Send more grant money and it "May be". Send us a ten year grant and we'll announce what decade it may explode after the grant money stops flowing.
If they could be a little more exact on the timing or at least a hockey stick graph of possibilities I could avoid traveling in the area.
And here i’ve been keeping my eye on Yellowstone...
Chain reaction time?
Why is a mountain in Wa. a “China Topix”?
These volcanoes emit greenhouse gases, smoke, and particulate matter well in excess of permitted emissions. In fact, one good one can emit more bad stuff than all human activity over the past 500 years.
This calls for demonstrations. Got to be stopped.
Mt. Saint Helens erupted in 1980 after only a few months of visible activity. It’s only about 50-60 miles from Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Rainier is much closer to “civilization.”
We’ve known THAT for years.
They’ve got sensors, seismographs, and whatnot up the kazoo on that mountain. If anything starts moving underneath, the scientists will know. Now, whether they can interpret the signs in time...that remains to be seen.
One apocryphal story involving Mt. St. Helens ( I learned this from a park ranger/volcanologist while visiting St. Helens)....They know from volcanoes in Hawaii that they give off a certain gas before they erupt. Before the big eruption of May 18, 1980, they were looking for those gases at St. Helens, but they didn’t detect any. They had sensors sniffing the air at the crater on top...but they were looking in the wrong place.
They realized later that the gas they were looking for was seeping up into the ice and snow covering the mountain...and was present in the meltwater coming off the mountain. If they had known this, could it have been possible that a bit of a warning could’ve been given? We’ll never know. What the volcanologist also told me was that since we now know this, we’ll know what to look for at the other volcanoes in the Cascade Range.
And that’s only one, too. There are about 1,500 of them on land, and tens of thousands of them under the ocean.
WOW!
HooRay!
We need not worry about Glubull Warming ever again!!
The Mt. Rainier blowhole will meet up with the Yellowstone Caldera, and human life will no longer feel the pain.
Now, since cockroaches have been living for millions of years, and I’ve been fighting them forever, which little SOB is going to scribble his forefeeler across my mortage document and finally laugh when they take over my house???
Bastards!
#stopourvolcanoes
Take that Mount Rainer!
Cockroaches have two brains each (second one is in their posterior), so they might figure something out.
Wherever I go I hope there’s rum.
