On July 23, 2012, the sun unleashed two massive clouds of plasma that barely missed a catastrophic encounter with the Earths atmosphere. These plasma clouds, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), comprised a solar storm thought to be the most powerful in at least 150 years.
If it had hit, we would still be picking up the pieces, physicist Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado tells NASA.

Analysts believe that a direct hit could cause widespread power blackouts, disabling everything that plugs into a wall socket. Most people wouldnt even be able to flush their toilet because urban water supplies largely rely on electric pumps.

According to a study by the National Academy of Sciences, the total economic impact could exceed $2 trillion or 20 times greater than the costs of a Hurricane Katrina. Multi-ton transformers damaged by such a storm might take years to repair.
CWGs Steve Tracton put it this way in his frightening overview of the risks of a severe solar storm: The consequences could be devastating for commerce, transportation, agriculture and food stocks, fuel and water supplies, human health and medical facilities, national security, and daily life in general.

Sounds like the premise of my just released novel ‘EMP’ where a massive CME creates a worldwide EMP.
Got to be one hell of a cap :)
Back during Hurricane Sandy, lot of single moms at the local shelter. Not only for the food & water, but so the kids could charge up their hand-helds. Without them, everyone in the house was going buggy.
We dodged two more bullets recently. One only six months ago, and another one last summer.

The sun’s been acting up for some time, now. So NASA’s 12% odds are probably on the low side.

I'm not so sure. Without being able to look up how on the web or their smartphone, they might not be able to pull it off...
Good point. It isn't like the wheel would have to be reinvented, and there will be numerous examples out there to figure out things.
More primitive vehicles will be at a premium for a while...and anyone with a pre-computer auto/truck could stash spare critical components where they'd be safe from an EMP or Carrington event. (Starter, coil, points, generator/alternator, condensors, light bulbs, etc.)
I was watching Mountain Men a few weeks ago. One guy made fuel for his truck from firewood {chips}. He said it was a method used back around 1900 or so.
I’m marking that forum as one of my new favorite websites. I’ve always been fascinated with that sort of DIY.
