Did a Russian soldier's trigger finger blow MH17 out of the sky. US says separatists would struggle

U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power told an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Friday that the United States cannot rule out that Russia helped in the launch of the surface-to-air missile that shot down a Malaysia Airlines jet over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

Power said the U.S. believes the plane was likely downed by an SA-11 missile fired from an area in eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russian separatists. She said Russia has provided SA-11s and other heavy weapons to the separatists.

Britain's U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant, who called the emergency meeting, was more emphatic on assessing blame for the crash. And Ms Power it is likely that Russian military personnel were at the controls of the missile battery that downed the airliner.

New intelligence seen by the New York Times, suggest a surface to air missile on Monday shot down a Ukranian military plane from inside Russia’s borders – just days before MH17 was blown apart. It is possible that the same battery was then moved into Ukraine, where it shot down the Malaysian airlines jet liner.

The Russian military said they detected radar activity in the vicinity of several Ukrainian missile batteries in eastern Ukraine on the day in question. They were specific about the locations and the times.

The Russians lie. They are the masters of disinformation. They told us there were no Russian military in the Crimea. The people wearing uniforms without insignia had picked up the uniforms in local stores. Anyone who buys what the Russians are saying is a fool.

Truth is you should be awaiting the evidence too. If the evidence says Putin did it, what do you think America should do keeping in mind the state of our troops and the fact Obama is CIC, Jon Cary is SOS, Jeh Johnson is Homeland Security, and Chuck Hagel is Defense Secretary? Are you prepared for more Americans to lose their lives for another war that will probably accomplish nothing, like the others anymore, when those most involved are Europeans. Even they seem fairly disinterested in reacting. All the bleating anger while our guys are supposed to save their bacon one more time while they dole out the socialism at home instead of creating their own military capabilities.

Obama talking tough and making threats is not going to do much.

Of course, competent operator can distigtuish between small attacking fighter-bomber and airliner based on limited indicators above but it is not the case for a noob who are still able to lock on and hit target like it is a video game.

What are the odds that the Russians would trust a weapon like this in the hands of a "noob" especially when its commercial planes fly over the area as well???

No evidence but it is Ukrainian government to benefit the most from the disaster.

Not so Igor --

Because of this the air corridor of planes flying east-west over Ukraine has been shut down causing greater hardship and expense for European and Far Eastern airliners.

Putin has just punished the West for it's association with Ukraine and is forcing it to pay a high price.

The Russians lie.

All the more reason to check out the Ukrainian missile batteries isn't it?

Assuming you really want to find out who did this...

IMO we already know who did it. The British UN Ambassador said that "Russian military personnel were at the controls of the missile battery that downed the airliner."

We have been monitoring that area with our intelligence satellite technology for months. We know exactly where the missile was fired from and NSA has all of the ground communications directing it. We probably shared some of it with the Brits hence the British UN Rep's remarks.

For whatever reason, we don't want to share that information with the public. Perhaps we are using it as leverage against Putin to pressure him into doing something helpful re the Iranian talks or in other areas.

>> Russian training and assistance

Not sure that matters if Russia was not directly involved in the decision to target the plane.

A BUK and a bottle of vodka an hour earlier is not a good combination...

I'm not sure why this whole "lone drunk Russkie" thing keeps getting repeated. Maybe it's because Russkies are known to be drunks, but that doesn't mean it was one guy shooting it down without orders. One of the recordings of the shootdown and crash was filmed by the "separatists" themselves, and it is pretty clear they were operating as a unit, and were pretty gleeful about it too.

Truth is you should be awaiting the evidence too.

Who's evidence? Russia's. The Ukraine's. The Canadian and British and Dutch leaders have all indicated that it was done by Russia or their allies. Are they all taking shots in the dark and speaking without evidence? Or have their own intelligence services basically confirmed what the entire freakin' world, minus the Putin admirers around here, already know?

Shortly they will determine that this was intentional — Putin giving the West the finger for its sanctions and saying that it was only a Malaysian jet this time but next time it might be Lufthansa or Air France.

The net effect of this incident is that Putin has forced European and Far Eastern carriers to now fly around Ukraine all together — costing them time and fuel and money and creating greater difficulty for east-west air travel.

In fact rebels has bragged they’ve overrun an air defense base capturing two Buks in late June, though it was reported both were in bad condition.

This is generally regarded as disinformation, and promoted by the "separatists" themselves who like any bit of propaganda to raise morale from their ignorant followers. The "reports" all go back to a single article by Russian state controlled media, and have not been confirmed by any other source. The Russkies have a habit of planting such stories into their media right before sending in the "captured" item from Russia into Ukraine.

Furthermore, NATO knew about the Buk launchers 2 weeks ago, and saw them on the Russian border, with training going on for your so-called "plug and play" weapon, with Russian officers assisting "separatists". This was reported about 2 weeks ago in a press briefing, but no one in the media seemed to notice until the last day or two.

I’m surprised there are so many Russia apologists around here.

I’m not sure what difference it would make who actually fired the missile that brought down the aircraft. I don’t know anyone who believes that this incident involved the deliberate downing of a civilian aircraft (every indication is that the culprits thought they were shooting at a military jet) ... which means the Ukrainians/Russians will simply join a growing list of military forces — including the United States — who have done this sort of thing.

Considering the Russkies are claiming that the civilians were "already dead" for at least 2 days before they were put on the plane and flown over Donetsk and into the innocent missile minding its own busines (such is Strelkov's opinion), I do not think this will go over so nicely. Furthermore, we were sued in international court and paid a great deal in damages to the people in that down jet. It's not like nothing happened, and no nothing will be happening here.

It’s just that people are saying that the ONLY way the Buks could be in the hands of the rebels is if Putin personally gave them to the rebels...while that certainly could be true, it DOES NOT have to be the case here.

Wetpheonix is just repeating what he heard from Russian media, and maybe reported in some other naive places. Check my previous reply.

I have no love for Putin. I have no love for Obama either. The rest you listed aren’t particularly trustworthy either.

So you never answered my question. What do you want the US and Obama to do about this Malaysian airplane incident?

True. It is all about perceived power and will. I would say Pootie Pooh looked deep into Obama’s soul, and saw a deep vacuum. A listless former abused child chom gang atheist with daddy issues. You know Latin has a bigger file on Osaka than we have.

Putin saw someone he could disregard. Like Hitler saw in Chamberlin. Just one good kick...
