Whilst a synopsis is maybe not entirely necessary given that the title of The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies pretty much sums up what the films about - a battle involving five different armies. Warner Brothers have released the official synopsis.
Okay, so it goes into a bit more detail than "there are five armies and they do battle" so it isn't entirely a lost cause like the 'Snakes on a Plane' synopsis might've been, and I'm pretty much allowing my prejudice against the third Hobbit film's name change shine through. I liked 'There and Back Again' dammit!

I also wished the name “There and Back Again” h*d been kept.

It’s pretty much the original title that actually ties this trilogy to Jackson’s other trilogy.
How about this title: They’re All About To Fight Over the Gold, But Then The Goblins Show Up So They Fight Them Instead, But Unlike The Book Thorin Doesn’t Die. Oh, The Goblins Lose”.
Great!Fine!Wonderful!
Dont look to buy the dvd, in any format.
Oops, I probably shouldn’t have posted a spoiler.
That’s racist.
That’s OK I read the book.
As a Tolkien junkie, I was happy when they decided to make the LOTR and then The Hobbit, but as time went by I became increasingly disappointed with the ‘artistic license’ taken by Jackson in LOTR. My opinion is The Hobbit is a bit better but all the ‘license’ ruined the movies.
When I’m a famous film maker I will right the wrongs. The road goes ever on and on! haha.
“may the hair between your toes never fall out” best line of the book.
seriously when they bloated the book into THREE movies, i knew they were milking the cow. the declining popularity of the hobbit sage bears this out.
very disappointed, but then jackson has to make some money to offset his past few disaster films (king kong, etc..)
PJ has a bad case of Auteur’s Disease. He thinks he is bigger than the story. He’s also basically a kid (not an entirely bad thing, BTW) enamoured of his new toys, special effects and technology, which he is letting dominate the plot.
Thorin Doesn’t die????????????? Not that I am totally surprised.....almost everything is changed from the book here. >:-(
Instead of releasing extended directors cuts for each movie, do you think they could be convinced to release a special version that combines all three movies into one watchable 2 hour version of the entire book?
Tolkien junkie here as well. I’m on my 17th reading of the LOTR. Good on you for having issues with “license”. But I still loved every minute of each movie.
good luck with that! if they had to do it again, it’s take 9 movies spread out over ten years in order to redo the LOTR
Exactly, the special effects, toys and technology dominated the plot. Precisely, well said. The Helm’s Deep battle is a perfect example from my perspective.
haha. Good for you. My kids make fun of me because I keep re-reading the book. Christopher Lee is reported as saying that he reads the book once a year. What a fantastic story.
Tolkien was an amazing writer. But more so, he wrote “true” myth which is quite different from most mythologies. His deep seeded roots of Christianity were more than a foundation and possibly the very stuff behind the Silmarillion, the LOTR and the Hobbit.
I actually leaned to write in Feanorian I was so addicted to this myth. I devoured everything I could written by or about Tolkien. My wife thinks I’m nuts. Well, maybe a little!!! haha
