Word For The Day, Wednesday, July 16, 2014-- oriflamme

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

oriflamme [awr-uh-flam, or-]

hear it pronounced

noun
1. the red banner of St. Denis, near Paris, carried before the early kings of France as a military ensign.
2. any ensign, banner, or standard, especially one that serves as a rallying point or symbol.

Origin
1425–75; late Middle English oriflam < Middle French oriflamme, Old French, equivalent to orie golden (< Latin aurea, feminine of aureus, derivative of aurum gold) + flamme flame

History
sacred banner of St. Denis, late 15c., from O.Fr. orie flame, from L. aurea flamma "golden flame." The ancient battle standard of the kings of France, it was of red or orange-red silk, with two or three points, and was given to the kings by the abbot of St. Denis on setting out to war. Cotgrave says it was "borne at first onely in warres made against Infidells; but afterwards vsed in all other warres; and at length vtterly lost in a battell against the Flemings." It is last mentioned in an abbey inventory of 1534.

Leftists are insane. They keep thinking if they win a senator in Massachusetts, they can win the presidency. The pattern keeps proving them wrong but they repeat it anyway.

Palin is the oriflamme for many freepers. I guess I am a RINO, because I think impeachment would be disastrous. In a perfect world, YES, of course he has committed impeachable offenses. Can he be convicted of them? no, he cannot, and would not be. so what is the @##$%ing point then? because it's RIGHT? well yes, we love being right on principal and then being ROYALLY SCREWED in practice. that's how we DO. That’s what I said in 2008. That a rookie senator with a Marxist background could not win.

I was wrong.

The population of this country is not what I thought it to be. Not any more.

I agree with you.

It’s a shame that the governor just jumped the shark but maybe that’s the only space left for her....

I still think they should impeach. Who cares if the dem Senate won’t convict? They wouldn’t convict Clinton either.

Oreilly and Kelly are reaching that same conclusion. I think they are still hoping that people’s better sense will prevail. Oreilly has said more than once that the election of any Dem will just speed up progress along this same path. he has woken up. no more evenhandedness or giving Obama the benefit of the doubt from him, he is incredulous at what is happening.

and the Republicans would be painted as racist haters and will never win another election again. We are likely in that boat already, but that would INSURE IT. what is the goal if he won’t be convicted and removed? to set the record straight for the history books??? of what possible moment is that if we will set up Dem administrations for election ad infinitum.
this ivory tower BS of being RIGHT and insuring conservative irrelevancy, drives me insane. What the hell GOOD is it to be right if you can’t CHANGE anything?

Because he has committed impeachable offenses and should be held accountable. We will lose battles but win the war. This is the same argument that was presented when they went after clinton for his offenses. It did not hurt the party. They can cry victim and racism all day but the truth cannot be denied.

What is the point of ignoring all of it and hoping it goes away? Look where it got us, two more years of this incompetence and corruption.

Yep. Tilting at windmills and wasting political capital for nothing. Or less than nothing.

If the GOP were smart, they would focus on economic issues, real middle-class pocketbook issues, like a laser. EPA and rising electricity rates and shortage because of coal plants closing. Gas prices because of environmental issues and Feds dragging their feet on approval of drilling and harrassment of refining.

Taking on the enviro extremists in the name of the economic interests of the “Reagan Democrats” and the hopeless millennials (now that they are in the 6th year of Obama unemployment) and all of the other people who want to work and succeed is the last gasp hope.

They need to forget about being loved by the media and the “scientific consensus” and start talking common sense. Enough is enough.

Knock off a few other agencies with unlimited regulatory power and nothing but ill results while they are at it, like Education.

See the soother’s response. We will not prevail in an impeachment scenario, and being right will accomplish nothing but insuring we never win another election. Those in congress, even the true conservatives, don’t see it as a wise course. They know the consequences. Sarah Palin may not.

I think it’s OK for SP, being outside “the system”, to speak out and tell the public why Obama should be impeached.

But, she needs to state at the same time that impeachment would be impossible because of the race issue.

That, basically, America has elected someone that can’t be held to the checks and balances the founders built into the government.

exactly. the ONLY thing the great unwashed care about are economic issues. they do not give a good damn about encroaching executive power, or foreign policy debacles or myriad other OUTRAGEOUS things he is doing. they don’t CARE! We are not going to get justice for Obama on this earth. we just aren’t. But we CAN hope to elect someone who MAY avert the almost certain disaster we are becoming.

yes, I can see that, it makes sense that she say what others can’t. but you have freepers beating the dang gong for her and how she is being dissed, and they should do what she says, etc. and that drives me nuts. the purists make me want to open my veins.

People don’t want political fighting, they want an improved economy.

GOP needs to tell the real story about unemployment and growth and inflation. Tie it to the failed policies and theories of Obama and the “progressives” in charge of the Dem party.

They won’t get elected by promising to impeach anyone. They will if they offer common sense solutions to getting the economy working again.

A GOP Congress will make Obama’s duck even lamer and if not actually achieve real change help set the contrast for the 2016 election.

Then, for fun, they can always hold impeachment hearings on Holder.
