Word For The Day, Tuesday July 15, 2014
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
Coxcomb [KOKS-kohm]
-n
1.a conceited, foolish dandy; pretentious fop
2. Archaic head; pate.
[Coxcomb is a corrupted spelling of cock's comb , the comb of a rooster, hence the badge resembling it that was worn in the cap of a professional fool or jester, hence the wearer of the cap, hence a fool or a vain and silly man.]
Xsteen will not be a bridezilla ever. She’s orderly and measured. Her one concern remains the hairdos being done in time. My stylist is coming to our house at 6 am that morning and has 8 heads to dress. Xsbaby and I only want blow dried and we have short hair. 2 bridesmaids want half pulled back and 4 want up dos. They need to come with a pic of what they want or just trust her judgment no dilly dallying. We should leave house by 9 am for the church. I think it will be okay, but she’s sweating the timing of it. replies to invitations are trickling in. Alarmingly few NOs... Like only 4 people so far. We need more NOs LOL! Though I need to check with whyisatexasgirlinpa to see if the replies are usually front loaded with yesses.
We had very few no's as well, but then again it was a smaller wedding
People are terribly slow with the RSVPs.
Some people you will be hunting down until the end. Or you could presume those to be No’s...
The rain/cool front has brought our temps down drastically too - it is very pleasant out at 81 degrees right now!!!
When you presume, you make a pre out of you and me.
That is great, all sounds under control-I think the hair thing is always a problem, because it every woman wants her hairdo fresh out of the box at the event-as in done 30 minutes ago, max. My cousin and I did each other’s updos-just a quick twist decorated with a clip-a couple of hours before the ceremony though...
Fortunately, the cub’s matron of honor was a beautician/stylist-she asked the women in the bridal party to just come an hour early to the wedding venue with freshly washed hair, and she set up shop and did all the hair in the changing room. The air in there was so thick with hairspray you could actually see the cloud of it in the videos...
Oh forgot you went thru this recently! There have not been surprise YESs yet. I will hunt down believe me!
It is 78 here-not much rain yet, but the breeze has come up...
10 am wedding makes that more difficult. I’m
Good to go at 6 am as is xsbaby. Leigha is quick. Xsteen is going to have her do her hair and makeup for the shower this weekend so she will see how long it takes.
Well these girls are in no position to make demands, they’re lucky we offered the option . They are to come with hair dry and ready to go.
I’ve lighted the grill and I’m about to put some boneless chicken thighs on-the grill is covered and under trees, so even if it rains, I won’t get very wet and neither will the food. I’ve got bagged Italian salad greens and fresh onion, zucchini, some green olives and a can of artichoke hearts-in the fridge, nice and cold, put all together and it makes salad to go with chicken for a light dinner...
Good idea!
Sounds good!
Lit. You lit the grill. Sorry, a pet peeve of mine. I know it’s an option, but I hate it. Like people who “pleaded” in a court. Pled.
I do say people who “pled” in court, but I grew up hearing lighted the fireplace, grill, fireworks, etc-and also that someone should be “hanged” rather than “hung” for something awful. People around here say both. You seldom hear ahorcado-hanged, but rather colgar-hang/colgado-hung used if you are bilingual-I’ve never used ahorcado, either...
You’ve guaranteed I will look for every opportunity to annoy you- I lighted a candle for fear the power will go out bc we are under another storm watch. Xsbaby pleaded for it. ; ) that is such an anal retentive pedantic pet peeve..
Looks like we will get the cooler temps after tonight’s storms too. Nice bc it’s been steamy.
Better to light a candle than to curse the pedant.
I know it’s a style issue, and not an error, but I still hate it.
The only way I would use it is in a sentence like “they have a lighted swimming pool.” Even then, I would refer to it as “well lit.”
The SoothingDave style book says people are hanged, while objects are hung.
I would only say well lighted if the illumination was very bright-otherwise it is just a lighted pool-a very drunk person, however is “well lit”...
And once the flame has touched the wick, is the candle “lit” or is it “lighted”?
