"URGENT! BREAKING AS I WRITE THIS... Israel is currently starting the ground invasion in to Gaza!
It is currently 2am local time in Israel, they are shelling from the ground, small arms are being used and a reporter in Gaza just stated that he has seen Israeli Special Forces landing on the beach."

Similar report from NBC. After 6 days of rocket attacks it is apparently now Israel who is conducting an “offensive” according to the MSM.

Israel will probably regard that as too costly. Hamas is not just a terrorist organization, it is also the governing party in Gaza. Whatever Israel does it can't leave Gaza a smoking ruin without any governance. Also, they'd have to stay a very long time to eradicate a political/ideological movement - and I don't think Israel wants to be in Gaza with boots on the ground at all if they can avoid it.
My guess is this operation is designed to degrade Hamas, demonstrate their powerlessness so they become even more unpopular in Gaza than they already were, and generally make it difficult for Hamas to launch rockets or do much else of significance for some time to come.

The word “incursion” is highly judgmental. Note how they shape the news.
NBC wrote their article as if this “5-day offensive by Israel that has killed 150 Palestinians” was totally unprovoked or something.

By the time we got word of it, it was a done deal. There were no "loose lips" in this. It was a massive show of Israeli force.

No, it really can't. Not in today's media environment when even we can't/won't fight wars properly (to win using all means to end the conflict quickly).
The problem is there are 1.6 million people in Gaza squeezed into a very tiny area and if Israel pounds it to the point is has no functioning governance or stable infrastructure then the humanitarian crisis that will follow is what will make all the news - not anything Hamas or Islamic Jihad did. Israel has to worry 100 times more than even we do about avoiding civilian casualties, wrapping up their operations quickly, etc. The world press will condemn them quickly, and no, they can't ignore that in the current environment.
That's just the political reality of things. I don't believe Israel wants to even put boots on the ground in Gaza, but they may do incursions and/or a limited operation to get at the tunnels, weapons caches and terror operatives that are hard to get at (mostly because they are intentionally placed in civilian areas). To do that, airstrikes alone won't be enough. Still, they'll almost certainly keep it much shorter than many would like.
