Pilot buys pizzas for passengers grounded by storm

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Faced with potentially hungry — and grumpy — passengers, a Frontier Airlines pilot treated them to pizza when storms diverted a Denver-bound flight to Cheyenne, where the plane was stuck for a couple of hours.

Cheyenne Domino's Pizza manager Andrew Ritchie told The Associated Press that he got a call about 10 p.m. Monday just as he was about to send employees home. Ritchie said the pilot told him he needed to feed 160 people — fast.

I thought this was a great human interest story, especially given the many poor experiences reported by airline travelers. Enjoy...it's worth the click to read.

If I ever fly again, and Frontier services the destination .. they have my fare.

But will they have straps for hanging?

160 people?! That’s a lot of pizza. Haven’t read the story but my guess would be 30 pizzas times at least $10 each. $300+?

Superb PR move by the captain. Frontier will no doubt reimburse him for his efforts, and the passengers will long remember his generosity.

I think it was 35 pizzas. Maybe they gave him a quantity discount? Classy gesture by the pilot, and the passengers will no doubt have memories of the pizza gift that are stronger than those of the weather delays.

Back in the old days we were able to authorise such PR actions, free drinks on board etc. and usually the company would OK it. Later on, the bean counters took over and we had to foot the bill ourselves. After that, we mostly just gave up. (Ret. legacy airline capt.)

i agree. frontier SHOULD reimburse the pilot, but somehow i have my doubts. frankly every airline ought to have this attitude towards their passengers

Dominos is hardly pizza. It sucks.

The only commercial airline I have ever been on was Frontier. I enjoyed all 4 flights, everyone was very nice!

Perhaps you have Cheyenne confused with Chicago??? Having been to both and understanding that it was 10pm, I think the pilot did the best he could and I’m willing to give him full credit for his customer focus.

When I came back from Iraq we stopped in Delaware. The ladies at the USO ordered pizza for us but it didn’t arrive when we had to re-board our flight. They said that if it arrived before we took off they’d bring it out to the place. It arrived and they were good to the word!

Love the USO!

Airline food is better than Dominos.

It’s a lovely story, but as someone who flies a lot, praising anything about air travel currently, is difficult for me.

But you have to admit, it took them decades to figure it out but they finally have a business that makes money.

The Frontier Airlines main office should give this pilot and his crew a healthy bonus this year, because he just gave his company hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars of great public relations and goodwill.

Then they should seriously consider a policy playing off the pizza delivery slogan: “If you are delayed for (30 minutes? An hour?), the pizza is free!” (Their accountants could figure out the actual time before free pizza is invoked, plus the production and delivery time of the pizza.)

It might cost them a few thousand a year, and earn them millions in customer preferences.
