The morning after the night before, Brazil will wake up, shake its head and pray it had all been a terrible nightmare.
Left disorientated, punch drunk and confused by the 7-1 annihilation in the Estádio Mineirão it will take time for the full implications to sink in for a country that had so much invested in all senses of the word in World Cup success.
The newspapers, broadcasters and websites that had spent the last few days whipping up a sentimental tidal wave of sympathy for Neymar turned on Luiz Felipe Scolaris men.
David Luiz, the capering heartbeat of this side and its second most popular player after the stricken No10, was now the tear stained villain.
The Mineiraco, as it is already being called in an echo of the deep impact of the 1950 Maracanazo when Uruguay defeated Brazil in the final the last time the tournament was held here, was variously described as the disgrace of all disgraces and a historic humiliation. Sports paper Lance called it the biggest shame in history.
The previous day there had been even bigger tailbacks than usual in São Paulo as Brazilians rushed home to ensure they were in front of a television set. By 5pm, the streets were eerily silent in Brazils biggest city. What was to follow was equally unsettling.
The effects will be wide ranging, for a whole host of reasons political, economic and cultural in a country where, despite everything, football remains so closely bound up with national identity.
For president, Dilma Rousseff, who found herself the target of obscene chants that had not been heard inside World Cup grounds since the São Paulo opener, the result could have an impact on her re-election prospects in October.

hahhahahhahhahah....idiotas are having a national day of mourning. I am surprised a few soccer team members were not killed
It’s early. They are still in shock.
Expect some riots with fatalities to come.
7-1 score adds heaps to the disgrace. Brazil could live more easily with a 2-1 loss
You are right. They are still in a state of shock. Revenge and denial are coming. If I were on this losing Brazil team I would scoop up my family and take a loooong vacation far away.
I agree. I already read somewhere the Goalkeeper was being harassed last night.
David Luiz is a decent person and a good player...it would be awful if Brazilians placed blame on him. They had him going up field everytime Brazil was on attack...and left the defense open
Brazil is still a Third World country...and they are acting like one now
Think there will be a head line somewhere:
Brazil W A X E D
It’s just a game.
Brazil...South America...there’s something about the populations that’s just not quite right.
That explains the lopsided score.
I like Luiz (Chelsea fan sad to see him go) but he was primarily to blame on the first goal. Müller was Luiz’s mark and let himself get picked thus freeing up Müller. Luiz and the rest of team than began to ball watch for the rest of the half.
Brazil came out up tempo in the beginning of the 2nd half, but reverted back to ball watching 10 minutes later.
That has happened in other countries. Imagine if the Norks had a team that lost like that. They would all be dead by the next morning.
Sorry, than =then, jeez review your typing rollo
Brazilian illegals have overrun my town; happy to see them get whipped like this.
FWIW, they have to face the shame of the third place game on Saturday...
give it time,
At least a few will meet their end as a result of this Brazilian debacle.
Their soccer team failed to win and so their lives have been ruined and cannot be redeemed.
For cryin’ out loud it’s a stupid game!
After Nigeria was eliminated from the world cup the Nigerian captain personally offered to refund all the expenses of fans that traveled to Brazil.
He said he just needs their bank details and pin numbers to complete the transaction!
What a nice guy!
How about them Germans, eh?
