FONTANA (CBSLA.com) A 4-year-old boy is recovering Tuesday after being mauled by his family pit bull Monday afternoon, officials said.
According to Fontana Police, around 3:30 p.m. Monday, officers were sent to the 7600 block of Honeysuckle Street for reports of shots fired, and a dog had been shot after attacking a child.
Around the same time, police reported two off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officers who live in the area responded to the home to assist the mother.
One officer shot and killed the dog as it was biting the childs head and face, police said.
Fontana officers said that when they arrived, the male pit bull, not neutered, had attacked a 4-year-old boy in his home.
The child was rushed to Loma Linda Medical Center for treatment. Both of the boys ears are severed, and he has numerous puncture wounds to his head and face, police said.
The entire community is supportive and praying for a speedy recovery, Fontana Police Department spokeswoman Martha Guzman-Hurtado said. Our hearts go out to this child and his family during this traumatic time.
Fontana adopted a pit-bull ordinance in 2011, requiring owners of pit bulls and mixed breed to spay or neuter their dogs before they reach the age of 4 months, officials reported.
Police say that research suggests dogs left intact may be more aggressive with age. Fontana police and LAPD are investigating the incident.
Those PBs go for the face.
Yet another mere coincidence.
Male - not neutered. Duh. In violation of the law as noted.
Whose home? The boy's, the dog's? or are these one and the same? Who owns the dog?
Discerning readers will note that the dog picture included with the poorly written and incomplete story is a stock Getty image.
A shining example of crappy writing and lazy "fact" gathering. Damn awful shame about the child, but there is plenty more to this story. Which we will never learn.
Because that covers about 90 percent of the owners of this garbage breed.
I know why gang bangers want these dogs. But why in the world would anyone have one with small children? Or big children? You can train them, they can be nice as can be, and then someday they can turn on you with unbelievable biting force.
The fighting breeds don’t think like a normal canine.Add an idiot owner who encourages the dog to act agressively, and you have a tragedy waiting to happen.
HOW MANY different breeds are there? Why do people choose THE most notorious breed? To prove the bad reps wrong,to feel tough ? Could they not love any other breed? And to choose pit bulls when you have children...all I can say..as a lifelong dog person...is the parents should be charged with child endangerment when these attacks happen.
Here is one cop shoots dog story that enjoys our support.
Bad owners again?
MAY NOT BE BAD, JUST STUPID!
Home of Hell's Angels ...Good place to buy a bad dog.
No one seems to have responded to my heartfelt plea that pitbull owners who are arrested be allowed to keep their loving pets in their cells. Neither inmate nor pet should be fed for 30 days. At the end of which time, the survivor should be released. Hint: bet on the dog.
I have also petitioned the AKC to recognize America's new breed, The Hoodie. Raised along Martin Luther King Boulevard near you, the Hoodie is bred from Doberman, Rottweiler, Presa Canario, and Mastiff, on a foundation of Pit Bull. Properly muzzled, there is no reason not to include these cute fuzzballs in dog shows.
The first sentence said “his family dog”.
I don’t think this is written as poorly as you do. I read poor articles here all the time, and this is OK. Misses some things, but that is true of every breaking story.
My biggest question - what kind of trash were these people?
Damn, I can't believe I missed that. Thanks for pointing it out.
My biggest question - what kind of trash were these people?
Pretty bad.
Having a decent sized male dog of any breed that hasn't been neutered around children is pretty stupid.
Guns, dogs, cars, heck just about anything with lethal potential, it's the stupid people that make them dangerous. When I was about 8 or 9 I got chewed on by a dog down the street owned by people of the same sort we read about in all of these dog incidents. Wasn't a pit, just a decent sized mongrel. But dangerous because of the trash owner.
I don't own a dog, don't want the commitment. But I have 2 "grandogs" that I love who visit regularly & stay with us when our daughter goes on vacation. She has fostered a number of pits and pit mixes, so I'm not the rabid breed hater like most in these threads. Everyone has their opinion. But I have REAL animosity for a LOT of dog owners because they are the real menace. I've come to think that responsible, intelligent dog owners are probably the minority, based on the number of jerk moron owners I've have to contend with over the years. I've wanted to take a baseball bat to some of them.
