In Six Months, Microsoft Will Pull The Plug On Windows 7 Support
Business Insider ^ | 7-8-2014 | JULIE BORT

Posted on 07/08/2014 10:05:09 AM PDT by Citizen Zed

Microsoft will end free mainstream support for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015.

That means no more security patches if hackers find holes, no more updated features or performance improvements.

This move will mostly affect consumers. Businesses that pay for extended Windows 7 support, as most of them do, will be supported for another five years, until January 14, 2020.

That's important, because many businesses are right now are in the process of upgrading their old Windows XP PCs, but they're moving to Windows 7, not Windows 8.

There's some speculation that, given the popularity of Windows 7, Microsoft might change its mind as the date nears and continue to support it a bit longer, like it did for Windows XP.

I bought one in Dec. and specifically looked for a Windows 7 install. Same for the one I bought for my dad. He’s 78, and I thought the transition from XP to Windows 7 was enough for him to handle. I’m Microsoft certified in Desktop Technology, and even I didn’t want to take on Windows 8.

Looks like the loons at MS aren’t about giving the customers what they want.

Like the loons at Yahoo who loused up their e-mail service.

I went with 8 to save a few bucks. The main reason I went to a new unit was to have something that could run studio 17 and 4K video capability to do stock submissions. That format pays more than HD.

If I can, I will bite bullet and get a camera next month.

You don’t have to live with 8.1’s iPad interface if you don’t like it. Right click on the task bar, go to properties, then click on navigation. You can get back the start button, modify the annoying charms, and other things.

I am attempting to be all Linux for everything, even my engineering stuff, by the end of 2014.

Windows 8 is complete and total crap. I could not have designed a worse interface if I tried.

Win 7 is on all my brand new engineering computers and works fine.

My shop equipment is running on XP.

MS has nothing but contempt for industrial customers. I miss the old days of UNIX based software but you can’t find it.

So, throw all their older customers under the bus, for extorted sales.

Which is precisely why the public eventually gets fed-up and starts elected Liberals on the promise of heavy-handed regulation.

Don't these fools ever learn?

I’m buying another laptop with WIN7 on it again this year, new. You just need to ask Toshiba etc and they’ll provide it for you.

Planned obsolescence.
MS never seems to be able to get anything right. Flashy screens, buggy software.

Microsoft runs their company the way that obama runs the country.

“If that’s true, it’s Linux time.”

I was thinking that last night. I have a Lenovo desktop and a Fujitsu laptop, both with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I pulled the laptop out to try Puppy Linux I put on a USB stick to see how it works and to “top off” the battery. While I had it charging, I decided to check for Windows updates. There was 200 meg to be downloaded and installed. That’s when it hit me.

Unless MS comes up with a compelling reason to stay with their OS, I’m gonna have to switch to Linux.

I would questions this report strongly. Is there a Microsoft announcement on this that can be linked?

They’ve always provided desktop OS support for two versions back since forever. Thus, XP was still supported after Vista and Win7 came out. When Win8 came out, XP support was dropped, as it was then 3 versions old. It would be a huge change of approach to drop support for the previous release.

...it’s Linux time.

Am liking this distro more and more every day and, so far, can recommend over any Zorin distro.

Right click on the task bar, go to properties, then click on navigation. You can get back the start button, modify the annoying charms, and other things.

I don't see that ability at all. Am I missing it?

X When I point to the upper-right corner, show the charms
X When I click the upper-left corner, switch between my recent apps
O Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell.....
X When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start
X Show my desktop background on Start
X Show Start on the display I'm using when I press the Windows logo key
O Show the apps view automatically when I go to Start
O List desktop apps first in the Apps view when it's sorted by category.
