Microsoft will end free mainstream support for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015.
That means no more security patches if hackers find holes, no more updated features or performance improvements.
This move will mostly affect consumers. Businesses that pay for extended Windows 7 support, as most of them do, will be supported for another five years, until January 14, 2020.
That's important, because many businesses are right now are in the process of upgrading their old Windows XP PCs, but they're moving to Windows 7, not Windows 8.
There's some speculation that, given the popularity of Windows 7, Microsoft might change its mind as the date nears and continue to support it a bit longer, like it did for Windows XP.

End of life six years after its introduction? That’s quick.
As if I (a single user) give a damn. First thing I did when I booted up my new PC with Win 7 was turn OFF automatic updates. I’ve had it, oh I don’t know, at least 4 years. Not done one patch or update.
You know what they call the first 5 million purchasers of a new Windows version? Beta testers.
This cannot be true. Windows 7 is the most popular OS out there right now.

Microsoft is getting desperate for more income. So, throw all their older customers under the bus, for extorted sales.

Our betters at Microsoft have decided that we’ll like Win8 better when we have no choice but to use it.
I bought a new PC that came with 8 and I don’t care for it but I might as well learn to support it.
Apple provides OS-X upgrades for free.

sure, you just pay for those updates up front when you buy the hardware.
Also they EOL hardware by writing support for older hardware out of the updates.

XP: support ended in 2009(hot fixes for the OS), but extended support (fixes for security) lasted until April 2014. Thats 2009 1st class support ended, then until 2014 for security patches!

If that’s true, it’s Linux time.
So following the XP pattern, people will be dumping Win 7 in 2020.
Hope Win 9 is out by then, because 8.1 sux. One of the problems they fail to mention, aside from its horrible interface, is that it is a huge memory hog because it has “overflows” built into it. So 8 MB of RAM is the least you can do with, and even then you will grind to a halt and all your programs will go dark every now and then. So you have to shut down and clear everything.
Seriously horrible design. Win 7 was very good and stable, much more so than XP, but none of the 8 family is worth a dime.
