Musk ox invasion keeps Nome wildlife managers busy
Anchorage Daily News ^ | comJuly 2, 2014 | SEAN DOOGAN

Nome is used to rowdy residents, but some relatively new transplants are making a real nuisance of themselves -- although unlike the colorful characters of the early 20th century gold rush days, these visitors have four legs, not two.

Musk oxen are wandering into the city on the Seward Peninsula, and despite loud noises, water hoses and even a blow-up bear coated in ursine urine, they don't want to leave.

No lying down for me...

I just took some Ibuprofen and hope the pain in my right side is just bruised ribs, and not a broken one. I’ve had enough with broken bones. I will take a closer look when I take my shower.

PS: I needed the pills and couldn’t seem to make contact with Busdaddy, either through texts or phone calls, so I just went back and got my stuff. When I pulled up in front of his place, I got a text from him saying he was on his way to Discount Tire to see why the front end of the TOWDOG was shimmying.

I went on in and smelled something burning, and since my insulated bag was in the kitchen, that’s where I headed. The fire was on under a small pan of eggs, but there was no water in it, and one of the eggs had exploded. I shut the fire off, stuck the pan in the sink and ran cold water in it, grabbed my insulated bag with the food and pills and left.

After I set the alarm, I called him, but could only leave a message, so I came home. I don’t know why he’s being such a Grumpy Gus today, but he can stay home and be Grumpy to himself.

Good thing you stopped by! I’m just back from Jake’s vet appointment. He got his stitches out and is approved to go outside ... only now he doesn’t want to, because he thinks we’re trying to trick him.

I just checked, and so far, there is no bruising on the right side, so I think I can rule out “break” and substitute “bruise.” At least with the Ibuprofen, I can breathe a little better.

Busdaddy is “having trouble” with his phone, but said he had to have the left front tire replaced, as the tread was coming lose. There was a day when tires were made in one piece. Then I think it was Pierrelli who came up with the idea of re-treading “new” tires and charging a bazillion for them.

Jake was so stressed by the vet trip that he had to lie down by the bowl to eat all the food!

Late lunch.

I don’t know where he is now - not in Kathleen’s bed, since she’s in it. Kathleen got in trouble at the gym nursery this morning: she kept taking her shoes and socks off. We’ll have to persuade her that isn’t fun.

Ohmy. Stinky bare feet in the gym nursery? Not cool.

After a dose of Ibuprofen, I don’t feel too rocky. Just a naggy little ache on the right side, about where my elbow meets the ribcage.

Said elbow has a smart bump the size of a quarter. I see the doctor on Thursday, so maybe the fall and swellings will be minimal enough by then to where he will caution me to be careful and not insist I have more ugly tests. Not likely, I think.

One of my goals this winter, among others, is to use up as much yarn as I can and donate the projects to my favorite charity. I ran across a bag of baby caps, from preemie to 10#ers, and will drop them by the hospital when I feel the need.

I just have to use up this stuff...I don’t want to be a hoarder. *shudder*

How nice that you found all those caps!

The nursery requires that all the children wear shoes. Kathleen was also taking toys away from other children. (At home, we just make the brothers give her what she wants, but that doesn’t work in public.) At least she’s not humming and gesturing and mind-controlling other children, like Pat did at her age.

The McDonald’s playhouse here insists on socks, but I’m sure other places require shoes. Health issues and all that.

Unfortunately, doctors get paid per ugly test.

Yes, I’m sure it’s a cleanliness issue, and also, they’re less likely to slip and fall, or get hurt of they drop a toy on their foot.

Like Auntie ‘Face did when she dropped a candle on it...if I had been wearing shoes, it would only have been bruised.

Which is why I keep refusing ugly tests. They aren’t benefitting anyone but doctors and the companies that devised the tests. I don’t want to be an accomplice.

Why would dropping a toy on their foot make them less likely to slip and fall???

Because they’re holding the foot and hopping around yelling, “Ow!”

Yesterday at the Botanical Garden, we ran into one of the mothers from the Envirothon team. Our previous leader got a job, having finally gotten her Colombian veterinarian credentials accepted in NC, and some of the students graduated, so I didn’t think we would do it this year. However, Mrs. D is planning to organize a high school team, at least, which would include her son, Elen, and Sally (and at least two others).

If a middle school team is proposed, Pat could be on it, or I could declare him a 9th grader for the purpose, and he could be a high-school alternate. While printing out the “Current Environmental Issues” information, I just found an online course in Water Quality Management at EPA.gov. Just the thing for Pat! He could be a 12-year-old Certified Water Quality Specialist.

PS (again)

WW Online is not allowing me to track my intake today, so I’m not eating...tomorrow is Weigh Day...wish me luck. Right about now, some Pink Drink would help the muscles relax.

So I’m off to bed...ta. (On my left side...)
