Musk ox invasion keeps Nome wildlife managers busy
Anchorage Daily News ^ | comJuly 2, 2014 | SEAN DOOGAN

Nome is used to rowdy residents, but some relatively new transplants are making a real nuisance of themselves -- although unlike the colorful characters of the early 20th century gold rush days, these visitors have four legs, not two.

Musk oxen are wandering into the city on the Seward Peninsula, and despite loud noises, water hoses and even a blow-up bear coated in ursine urine, they don't want to leave.

They factored in my age, too, so I’m sure they don’t have any great expectations.

Still, it sounds good. I’m so happy the portions aren’t “controlled” as they are with Busdaddy’s weight loss program. The thing I don’t like is “low fat.” I don’t do good with low fat anything. I can get to stupid in 24 hours with no or low fat. My brain needs it. So I will have to adjust something, somewhere.

At any rate, I’m thinking it will be money well spent, even if it means shopping more often. (Something I dread.)

If you need more fat, you can substitute higher-fat foods for higher-carb foods. For example, melt cheese over your chicken, but don’t have bread at the meal.

I’ve never been much of a bread eater, so adding butter or cheese is doable.

I could probably live forever with no bread. Well, maybe not Texas Toast Garlic Bread... ;o]

The number one thing is to limit your carbs/starches. The next thing is moderation in fats. Several people in my meeting don’t use low-fat or fat-free products. They eat foods with regular dairy or oils, and compensate by piling up vegetables and limiting grain products.

I discovered lemon-infused olive oil when I was on my Let It Go weekend, and now I always cook my vegetables and fish in it.

I use olive oil a lot, but I prefer coconut oil. Olive oil is versatile but coconut oil dissolves so easily!

Grain products have no real interest for me, unless the pasta is al dente and I can eat vegetables if they taste like “home.” I even bought a zucchini and a summer squash today, along with a bunch of salad fixin’s. I need to check the supply of olive oil, though. I think I’m low.

And I have to leave. The thunder is getting quite close, now, so I need to shut down the electronics. Dang. I was just beginning to get a handle on the WW thing.

Now it’s raining.

Later...

Good morning.

I have a pair of pink ones, but not a kitteh in sight.

It rained and thundered for the better part of an hour, and at one point it was coming down so hard I couldn’t see the parking lot.

I will have to wait til the news at 0430 to get the amounts and piccies. We need the water, though.

Good morning to you! Our cats are far too big. Jake’s going to get fat since he can’t go outside.

How is Jake-the-Wunder-Kat this morning?

My ulcers are kicking up so I need to go get a banana to make an ulcer cocktail or two today. That’s going to throw the diet into chaos.

I think I need to go back to bed. I woke up because of the stomach pain and couldn’t go back to sleep. I thought I’d have some milk, but I forgot to take it out of the freezer, so I had to eat something. *sigh*

This is not a good omen.

Bananas are 0 Points. If other ingredients in the ulcer cocktail have Points values, just write them down.

Jake is deeply annoyed at not being allowed outside. He also smells funny, according to Shannon.

I’m allowed outside. In fact, it’s rather insisted that I go there. There’s some work to be done.

I’d rather stay in.

Since I didn’t have a banana when I was here earlier, I had to eat something to stop the pain. So today will be a strange day at WW.

74 degrees, 56%, overcast. Ungh...

I will head for Walmart for the bananas, soon. Not that I want to. I just want to go back to sleep.

I think bananas can be frozen, for longer term storage and availability, but you might want to peel them first.

I try not to eat bananas because they have so much potassium. They make my feet swell. I usually only eat half of one at a time. Of course, I could buy a big bunch and dry them in the dehydrator, but that sounds too much like work, right now.

Too much like work, in the climate you’re in? What would it take, fifteen minutes?

Chewing on banana jerky sounds like more work.
