Musk ox invasion keeps Nome wildlife managers busy
Anchorage Daily News ^ | comJuly 2, 2014 | SEAN DOOGAN

Nome is used to rowdy residents, but some relatively new transplants are making a real nuisance of themselves -- although unlike the colorful characters of the early 20th century gold rush days, these visitors have four legs, not two.

Musk oxen are wandering into the city on the Seward Peninsula, and despite loud noises, water hoses and even a blow-up bear coated in ursine urine, they don't want to leave.

Busdaddy has been on Nutrisystem for three months, now and has lost 50 pounds. He told me he wanted to weigh less than I do. Well, I don’t think THAT’s going to work on a good day!

We’ve been talking about diets for longer than that, so he decided to help me lose the 40 pounds I need to get rid of.

He now has a safe, a home security system and a handgun, so his level of comfort should be on the rise. I hope so. It’s been so hard for me to know what to say and when. He’s getting back to normal now, because he’s getting testy.

The next thing is finding a place for him to live.

There is a way to get even ... Borrow a dog house and bring Busdaddy over and say, 'This is your new home!' Make certain no firearms come with him on that day.

I’m going to try and focus on me for a while and let the chips fall where they may on a house for Busdaddy. He needs to start doing that stuff by himself.

I will go back to WW page as soon as I get done with whatever I’m doing. Whatever that is. I’m not sure.

The agency called this morning to say Ordinary Mary was not coming back because there has been a schedule change. I’m so sick and tired of training new aides, I could just scream. And the agency doesn’t tell me they aren’t coming...they just call to tell me I’m getting a new one, which I think is lousy business practice.

They keep trying to pass the buck by saying “someone dropped the ball,” and my response was that ultimately, the administrator was responsible and that what I was experiencing with that particular agency was beyond ridiculous.

The overseer for the project is coming tomorrow and I will ask to have a different agency. It is harder for me to train a new person than it is to do the stuff myself, as it makes me sicker for longer. It takes a long time, but eventually, I’ll get things done.

Oh, that’s too bad. It sounded like Ordinary Mary was pretty successful.

She was good. She had a few quirks but she was always on time and always cheerful. I hate this.

And I just now told Busdaddy that I was going to find a realtor to look for a home for him, because by sitting here all day, going through 1,000 homes on realtor.com wasn’t getting my house clean. It’s been SITTING in the same condition basically since the break-in three weeks ago.

I’m still trying to sort out stuff for the thrift store and have a pile of “things” on my living room floor that I’ve been walking around since the morning of July 31.

No wonder I have chest pains and trouble breathing when I’m there...

Good idea. It used to be that an agent would help you find a rental, just in the hope that you’d call him when you were ready to buy or sell.

Kathleen finally finished her lunch. Now we’re really off to the gym.

Seventeen pages of realtors down, 208 to go... NOT!

I’m already tired.

Well, I emailed five realtors and figured none of them would call, but if not, I would check five more tomorrow. I was wrong. Number Four emailed me.

I just got off the phone with a gal who seems sympathetic and eager, so I’m waiting. She will find him a place and I won’t have to stress out. And he can’t get ticked at me for dragging my feet by not following up.

This morning, I went to Walmart and bought the things I could to start my WW plan. I found the pages I needed on the website, and the plan is for me to lose 10# in the next week. I wonder if that is even possible. I will have to go to the store more often, now...

I found some cantaloupe spears at Walmart, and surprise, surprise, surprise, they were ripe! Zero points!

It is not unusual for people in their first week to lose 5 to 10 lbs. (I gained a fraction last week.)

Tom found a thing on Facebook that generates random posts based on everything he’s previously posted. It’s hysterical. “I am obviously the brains who wanders around declaiming the word Realist.” “That sounds like a bunch of my baby trees.”

Kathleen let Jake out a few minutes ago, but I retrieved him while he was rolling over on the hot cement. Mao.

It just doesn’t seem realistic to me, but looking back, Busdaddy lost over 10# the first week, I think. He is now half way to his “goal,” but I think at his age (63) he will begin to look a little gaunt if he reaches his ultimate goal.

I don’t know if I should even have a goal. Or if I should just follow the diet till I reach X number of pounds. Maybe a 40 pound loss would be good. I seem to have a hard time getting past 30 pounds.

We are having some really active thunder, and while we have no rain here, and the thunder isn’t “close” there is a flash flood warning which a lot of people will ignore.

Oh. Look! We have rain! And the skies to the west are clear. Silly ol’ desert.

I’m not sure I would like that Facebook thing that Tom found. I’m afraid it might tell folks who I am. HAHAHAHA!

Weight Watchers has a range of weights for your height. Anywhere in that range can be your goal ... but you don’t have to have an ultimate goal. They suggest that your immediate goal should be to lose 10% of your current weight.

I thought it was rather revealing about Tom! If they had one for FR, what would we learn?
