Musk ox invasion keeps Nome wildlife managers busy
Anchorage Daily News ^ | comJuly 2, 2014 | SEAN DOOGAN

Nome is used to rowdy residents, but some relatively new transplants are making a real nuisance of themselves -- although unlike the colorful characters of the early 20th century gold rush days, these visitors have four legs, not two.

Musk oxen are wandering into the city on the Seward Peninsula, and despite loud noises, water hoses and even a blow-up bear coated in ursine urine, they don't want to leave.

There are some really nifty wasps that lay their eggs to parasitize the eggs of crop-harmful insects. (I think Japanese beetle eggs are the targets.) Live and let live seems to be a good policy w/respect to those guys.

Oh. Should’ve known you’d have it covered including illustrations. (Getting slower and slower here.)

Hi! I’ve been to the gym with a batch of children, and now I’m back, forcing the children to do various household tasks.

The humidity is up again, and that means more rain. It’s overcast for the most part — 86 degrees and 38%.

We went to look at my niece’s dog yesterday, and she is the sweetest thing! In dire need of a bath and nail clipping but friendly and smart. I don’t know if Busdaddy even liked her, but he’s not been known to make up his mind in a hurry.

I have the Slows today for some reason. Probably the weather. I don’t want to do anything. Hahahahaha!

We’re having rain on and off. Sally went out and pulled some weeds anyway; she’s hoping her Dad will pay her.

I’m getting the little boys started on the new school year. Vlad is already at grade level, so he can just pick up the 3rd grade books he started last year and resume. (He needs multiplication and division drill!) James is going on with 4th grade, which is behind, and we’ll try to accelerate him.

I signed Pat up on the “Khan Academy” website to work on math, since he needs to work on so many different skills at his grade level. I think, after only about an hour, that it’s going to work out well for him. The site has him work on a skill until he gets 5 questions in a row correct. Then it awards him points for completing the lesson. He also gets points for sticking with a concept even if he’s having trouble with it.

Once I figure out more about how many points are awarded for what, I’ll come up with a cash equivalent! Then he’ll really be motivated.

I admire your fortitude when it comes to home schooling. I already know you have the patience of a saint!

When we were learning multiplication and division in Third Grade, I was out for almost two weeks with rheumatic fever, and I never was able to catch up. With the advent of handheld calculators, however, I was able to spent most of my adult life in jobs where I handled money, from retail sales to cash cages. Go figure. No one would even guess that, now.

My math skills were about the first things to suffer when CFIDS came along, so I really struggle, now. When I had a checking account, I had to always go over the figures many times, and seldom came up with the same balance twice in a row. WITH a calculator! So now, I let the debit card people take care of my math. No NSFs, no fees, no late charges.

I’ll be leaving here in a few minutes to go to Aaron’s and see what I’m facing, and then I will stop at Walmart and get some more cheese.

Busdaddy “only” lost two pounds this last week, but at least he didn’t gain it. I weighed myself at home, and the scales said I had lost four pounds. When I was at Busdaddy’s, I weighed again and it said I hadn’t lost a thing. I like my scales better!

Back from an Elen Driving Event. We picked up one of Tom’s friends and then dropped him and Tom at another friend’s house. Then we went to the bank and Harris Teeter. I think I’ll lie down for a little while before I cut up the canteloupes I bought.

And I’m back from Aaron’s. *sigh* With a new laptop. They even let me have it for a dollar as my first payment! YAY!

Of course, it has Win8, and I will try to learn it, but I’m not going to even set it up until I get back from washing clothes. Tomorrow is the day I’m going over so I will bring back clean clothes and the Win 8.1 For Seniors, so I can navigate. The good thing is that Aaron’s has tech help.

I haven’t been feeling all that well the last couple of days, but I don’t know the cause. Maybe I’ll have a breathing treatment in a while and go lie down for a bit.

I’m sure it’s stress over the events of late, and of the behavior problems of the laptop. I can’t really afford it, but I need it...I do my banking online.

(Delayed reaction, but I just now shed tears for your kitty...may he and the mice have endless romps over the Rainbow Bridge, and may he be waiting for you.)

I wish you felt better. I wish computers didn’t break all the time. I wish none of our pets ever died.

Let’s all look forward to Sunbeam Eternity.

Pat is having fun with his new math instruction. I will have to force him to do calculation practice, though, because it’s not as fun as graphs.

I have bad days, good days and everything in between. I just never know which one is on the docket for “Today” until it actually arrives. Thanks for your empathy. It helps.

As to computers, I should probably have a massive all-in-one desk top that will do everything I want forever, but I get what I can afford, and put everything on the 3TB external hard drive. And I pay my bills before I buy groceries, as I am so afraid of being “late” on any account I have ever had, have now, or will have in the future.

I look forward to basking in the sun on a beach with a turquoise ocean within reach so when I get too warm, I can go cool off in the surf. Of course, that’s assuming that the Rainbow Bridge country HAS a beach!

But that ain’t gonna happen any time soon! I have too much to do. And dying computers remind me that time is limited and I need to get busy. I just don’t know where to start.

Good for Pat! I’m sure once he gets into the calculation process, he will find it challenging and rewarding!

I made a little something for him, and will send it with the next card.
