Nome is used to rowdy residents, but some relatively new transplants are making a real nuisance of themselves -- although unlike the colorful characters of the early 20th century gold rush days, these visitors have four legs, not two.
Musk oxen are wandering into the city on the Seward Peninsula, and despite loud noises, water hoses and even a blow-up bear coated in ursine urine, they don't want to leave.

LOTS of flooding yesterday, and a principle road was washed out in one of the mountain communities.
If I see DP again today, I’ll try to remember to mention it. Our paths may not cross!
I will keep poor Mr. Bill in mind when I’m at the dentist later. It’s going to be unpleasant.
James is throwing up this morning. He can go back to bed while I go to Weight Watchers with the other children. There will be plenty of adult-sized idlers around!
Bill spotted some crud in Jake’s right ear this morning. I cleaned it out with tea tree oil. Now Jake will hate me for an hour or so.
Thanks, as I said, no hurry.
Poor James. Is he finally getting what everyone else had a few weeks ago? Or maybe this is something new he’s trying to start.
*tagline*
I think James just has post-nasal drip. He says he feels better now that his stomach is empty. I’ll pick up some Emetrol on the way home from the dentist, though, in case it’s a new contagious Crud.
Good tagline. Sounds like something Grumpy Cat would say!
No weight loss this week for Busdaddy. He was pretty down on himself, but he will soon start his third month on the program, so I think it’s probably where the lull comes in the loss. There may be another down the road, but he’ll know how to deal with it, then.
He says he’s so hungry so much of the time that he almost gives in and eats something high in fat, calories and starch...like a doughnut!
His son is also trying to diet. I don’t know how he will do, as he has kids at home and a hugh fridge full of food, but at least he is trying.
Yes, it’s very likely that he’s hit a “plateau” - it happens even to men! It’s only a problem if you give up!
If he has food options, suggest more fruit and green vegetables (but not starch or legumes, like corn and peas). If not, a change in exercise might help. I think you said he was walking. If he’s been doing (for example) an hour in the morning, he could try a half hour morning and evening, instead.
And with that, I’m loading up the ganag to go to Weight Watchers.
When he’s working, he walks on his 10 minute “lay-over” breaks, then does the Gazelle at night for 30-40 minutes. He walks an hour in the mornings on his days off, but can’t switch off to 30 minutes AM and PM because the afternoon, when he gets home, the outside temperature is still on the rise, and when it starts to drop, he is in bed, as he has a 0215 reveille for a 0400 start time at work.
He doesn’t swim, and he can’t jog any more because of his artificial valve. Still, he is doing remarkably well with the restraints he has. He’s not much of a fruit eater...but has a salad every day or so. He has to be careful with that because of his blood thinner.
But I’m amazed at his determination.
Still alive. Busy as all get out. Work, switching rooms around, automotive work, dropping a few trees...
Busy busy bumble bee...
My boys would love to have that kit. What a fortunate pet that is!
Kinda creepy this morning at midnight, took Fredd out to pee and I could hear the wolves howling not to far away.
That’s OK...we know where you hang out, so we can post to you!
(Still, you ARE missed!)
Just got back from the Muffler Shop. Jerry said the truck would be ready around 1500, but I’m not going to go pick it up until tomorrow.
My place looks like I just moved in. I got the tubs into the closet, and even found some more winter clothes, including a coat I had forgotten about...it even has faux fur on the hood! YAY, ME!!!!! *taking a bow*
I re-stacked the book crates closer to the door, and on some cool morning I will go out and begin to sift. I will separate the keepers from the givers, and send you a list of the latter, so you can decide if you want them. I still have a bookcase in here to go through and about a dozen books in the bedroom, but I’m slow on this. There seemed to be so many other things that needed doing.
All my novelty winter vests showed up with the coat along with some pink embroidered suede Ugg-type boots, as well as a few more things from Pak, and everything seems to be accounted for. Though where it might wander by itself from storage is beyond my ability to think about... ;o]
It seems I need diuretics now, or I retain 6-8 pounds of water during the day. That doesn’t look too great when I’m trying to lose weight, myself. *mumble-mumble-mumble*
It’s been a long time since I was near enough to wolves to hear them.
It’s a sound that, once you’ve heard it, you never forget it.
That would worry me!
Check your diet for salt? I lost 1.4 last week. That’s 4 weeks in a row I’ve lost.
Back from the dentist. Unnngh. I took Sally’s mp3 player and listened to some awful music (and an occasional good song). I have to go again Thursday to get the other side done.
Congratulations on finding all your cool stuff!
It is real creepy, I have heard them or coyotes in the wee hours. They seemed a bit closer last night. I think they were wolves this am. Fredd even stopped in his tracks and looked at me.
I worry they will put a female wolf in heat near the house to draw out Fredd. he has been running off out of the yard the past few days.
It really worries me.
I did get buzzed by a bat the night before. Flew right in front of my face could feel the wind move. it was 3am. it was a bigger bat than i usually see. 7 inches wide.
I eat so little salt it’s not even an issue, and I take potassium every day to fight off the leg cramps.
If I think properly, I realize it’s because I sit here for several hours. Moving around doesn’t seem to help, either. About the only thing that helps is keeping my feet propped up and drinking tea or beer. “Couch potato” has taken on an entirely new meaning.
