these stupid white kids that allow their hair to go into uncombed rope ( dreadlocks ) make me sick . We have more and more of them showing up every day . They remind me of throwback Neanderthals . I look at girls that wear them and wonder what that rats nest must smell like . Unshorn Yak

This group of “free spirits” had gathering in Colorado in the ‘70s. I hadn’t heard much about them in a long time.

I picked up a hitchhiker today who was headed for this place. I’d guess he was about mid-sixties or so, maybe older, and I think he was gay. Scrawny as a rail and quite intelligent (an engineer) but hopelessly screwed up. Said he was going “home.” Poor man but all too common.

A few years back, I read about a community being ravaged by a strain of dysentery that doctors hadn’t seen since the civil war, after these folks had one of their festivals.

These “peace loving, free spirits” can be deadly. The last time I heard anything about the “rainbows” was when one of them planted an axe in another guy’s head during an argument over a parking space at a camp ground. Killed the guy.

There are some interesting twists and turns to the Rainbow Family that can be useful for organizations like the Tea Party.

The Rainbow Family has a decentralized organization based on consensus. This is done intentionally, because hierarchical organizations, like government, are unable to “interface” with any organization that is not hierarchical.

In this case, government does not like the Rainbow Family, and wants to undermine and destroy it, or at least prevent it from having gatherings. Much like the Tea Party.

So the first thing the government wants to do is to “arrest or subvert the leadership” of the Rainbow family. But there are no leaders to arrest or threaten, and this makes government very frustrated.

Next, they want to seize their assets. But they have no group assets, no treasury, no bank accounts.

So next the government wants to disrupt their process. To prevent them assembling at their gathering, to keep people out.

To get around this problem, they start by giving several broad areas where they might have their gathering. Then as it gets closer to the appointed time, they narrow it down. Until the last day, and suddenly everybody knows where to go and they converge on that place before government can shut it down.

The Rainbow Family know that the government would use any excuse to prevent them from gathering in the future, so after their gathering ends, they are very careful to police up any litter or trash, and even go so far as to reseed land where the local plants were destroyed.

And they have even figured out that to prevent government from getting too frustrated, they must give them a human sacrifice. In this case, they ask for a volunteer to drive the garbage truck.

And volunteers know that they will be arrested for being “a leader”, and could get up to six months in jail, just so the government doesn’t feel so impotent.

Importantly, the Tea Party naturally uses similar techniques, which is terribly frustrating to the GOP-e and people like Karl Rove. If the Tea Party was just a typical hierarchical organization, by now they would have either destroyed it or compromised it, or absorbed it to use as one of their own.

The Rainbow tribe and its annual wilderness gathering have been a notorious haven for a whole slew of criminal fugitives. Most of the time, Forest Rangers and Police don’t dare go near these events out of fear for their lives.
