My uncle had an old ice cream maker (the kind you put ice/rock salt in & hand cranked) and my aunt cooked up the custard on the stove, then they put in fresh peaches. It was ice cream heaven - never have had anything so good in the years since. It was always a treat to get to their house & hear it was ‘ice cream’ for dessert.
I have an electric ice cream maker and it also uses salt and ice. However, somehow or other the last time around, I wasn’t able to get the paddles going.
The container was just turning around and around inside the the ice packed around it, but the paddles weren’t doing any stirring on the inside of the container.
