While little Mosca the Jack Russell terrier was being noisily killed by wolves earlier this month in Chugach State Park just above Anchorage, the dog's owner was hiking along a trail to Wolverine Peak unaware of what was going on because he was wearing headphones.

Miniture pit bulls. But with a MUCH better public relations agency.
My JRT almost bought the farm after munching down on a Bufu toad. I stuck the garden hose in his mouth, cranked it on, and after a 15 minute rinse he stopped seizing. I thought he was gone and then I saw the look in his eye of "OK, enough of the hose now or your gunna get it".
I miss that bottle rocket like nothing else.

Yeah, mine has learned the difference between frogs and toads. Toads are for paws not teeth.

I never understood wearing headphones while hiking. The whole idea is to enjoy the place.****************************
I don't understand it either.

When I lived in Alaska I had a .454 Casul in a shoulder rig at all times. You keep your mind on everything around you as stuff wanted to eat you or hurt you. Had a moose come in the front yard and tried to paw me out from under my truck were I was hiding.

Ride couple hundred miles on the bike trail most weeks.
Audio books keep me from going bonkers.
But then I only listen with one ear. And I’m a little concerned with the safety of doing that.

Around town is one thing, off in the woods... enjoy it, with all your senses.

I'm thinking of the California woman killed by a train while jogging with headphones. Wearing headphones causes you not to notice you are walking on railroad tracks?
To: Albion Wilde
I am always disgusted when people sashay down the trails crashing leaves and yakking at the top of their lungs. They scare away any of the small wildlife who stay still and merely watch you attentively when a human passes by Indian-style as silently as possible. That's weird.
To: SamAdams76
What’s weird — people despoiling the quiet of the woods, or being annoyed by people despoiling the quiet of the woods?

Wearing headphones causes you not to notice you are walking on railroad tracks? No; she'd done it lots of times and the trains were always running the other direction so she would SEE them coming and step aside!
