USA advances to top 16
US qualifies because Portugal beats Ghana. Amazing...
But only by one point. Thanks, Germany, for stomping on Portugal last week and building up the point differential.
Two late chances in the 2nd minute of the extra time almost tied it.
We lost! We lost! Excited, everyone? Yeah the US didn’t score a gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal all came (close to maybe getting one at the end) but advances by backing in.
We lost by three less than Portugal did, that’s the difference.
Hey, don't forget he was at the Father of the Year awards the year he was schtupping his daughter's friend. The same year that presidential candidate John Edwards won the Father of the Year award for siring a bastard child.
Yeah the goals scored in various games makes the diff. Think they do the same thing (runs scored vs. runs allowed) in tiebreaker situations in Little League World Series. Maybe.
I wish I felt better about how we played. USA looked dangerous once in 90 minutes, is woefully inadequate in midfield and cedes possession far too easily. Where they are going, teams will really punish them for that.
I get that part of the midfield issue is Dempsey playing out of position while Altidore heals but an answer needs to come quickly.
Just Lose, Baby!!!
USA advances to Play Belgium Tuesday.
Tend to agree. I’ve never seen a sport like soccer where the goal (no pun intended) seems to be to deny satisfaction to the viewer. If the most interesting and exciting parts of the game are the situations where someone takes a shot on goal (a good shot on goal,) then why do the rules make it so hard for there to be more than a few legitimate shots on goal per game?
If they would make the goal about 6-8 feet wider and 2-3 feet taller (even if they increased these dimensions in metric), I might watch soccer. I just want the game to have some REAL football scores. Like 35-31. These 1-0 snooze-fests will never attract my eyeballs!!
Maybe we all need to watch the English Premier League, where scoring is more common. I’m actually glad NBC Sports got the Premier League package, so I can watch all the games either on TV or on my iPad Air.

Portugal would have to have beaten Ghana 5-1 to qualify. Not against this Ghanaian team, they couldn't have.
There's a name for teams that play beautiful soccer but don't advance. It begins with the letter "L".
Actually, football is not all that high-scoring. 35-31 is basically 5-4.5. The average NFL score total (for both teams) is 41 points. That's an average of 6 touchdowns per game for both sides. The World Cup averages 3 goals per game - low, but not exactly a tiny fraction of the NFL total.
Funny I never hear people complaining about how low scoring hockey is.
