If you have Velveeta cheese in the fridge, check the label. According to the Chicago Tribune, Kraft is recalling 32-ounce containers of the cheese after it was found that a specific batch didnt contain enough preservatives.
In a release, the company explained that, while unlikely, insufficient levels of sorbic acid in the 260 recalled cases of Velveeta original pasteurized recipe cheese product could cause it to spoil before the best-by date or trigger food-borne illnesses in people who eat it.
Consumers are advised to check their labels, and the recalled products have the code 021000611614, a date stamp that reads 17 DEC 2014″ and a timeframe of between 10:54 and 14:35. The case code can be found on the side of the package.

Worked for Kraft Foods in a cheese plant in Decatur, GA, over the summer of 1975. I worked the grave-robber sanitation crew shift and saw all the barrels containing cheese scraps reclaimed from all of the different cutting/packaging lines that were marked for Velveeta production stored in the chill storage room. So, yes, Velveeta contains cheese. Don’t know the formulation, so I wouldn’t hazard a guess on what percentage of the ingredients blend was actual cheese.
Maybe the shale oil doesn’t taste as good.
Didn’t The Who do a tune about Velveeta?
I have to ask-do you know if they boil the “real” bits of cheese down, and what do they mix it with to make “cheese product”?
Ha! Indeed. Well, something In It now sure doesn’t taste good. That’s fir dude. And I used to actually live the stuff, albeit I realized it was akin closer to Silly Putty than anything resembling real food It did used to taste pretty good, notwithstanding.
LOL!!
Now it all makes sense.................that FREE plastic Tupperware like storage thingy, remove the box & wrapper, put it in the plastic container, into the fridge, viola.....no expiration date, no codes..........................................................
Valveeta, I had no idea how much I’d need it
In hungry times I hold my nose and I eat it
My heart starts palpitating then I think my life is gone
But I think my valves are strong
It’s a cheese - It’s a food...
LOL! Nice work.
How come they’re just figuring out now that they didn’t put enuf preservative in?
Velveeta isn’t cheese. Never was, never will be.
“Velveeta” and “Cheese” should not even be used in the same sentence...ditto with “Wiz”.
You can make a homemade macaroni and cheese with Andouie out of velveeta that will knock your socks off.
Well now, it’s not like Velveeta was doing something totally crazy like using wooden boards for cheese-making! Sheesh.
I use half Velveeta and half sharp cheddar in my homemade Mac and cheese. Delicious. I also use Velveeta to make nacho cheese sauce. It definitely has its uses. My dad absolutely loved Velveeta and used it for everything.
I used to like it with Rotel. Now you can hardly taste the Rotel. It’s probably some secret ingredient to make us liberal. Thank God liberalism and the cheese put a bad taste in our mouths.
While my degrees are in food science, I didn't take any courses which covered cheese making. However, Wikipedia is our friend. I reviewed the 2 Wiki links below, and they do seem spot on.
Milk, water, milkfat, whey, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, sodium phosphate; contains less than 2% of: salt, calcium phosphate, lactic acid, sorbic acid as a preservative, sodium alginate, sodium citrate, enzymes, apocarotenal (color), annatto (color), and cheese culture.
Processed cheese (also known as prepared cheese, cheese product or cheese singles) is a food product made from a normal cheese (and sometimes other, unfermented, dairy by-product ingredients); plus emulsifiers, saturated vegetable oils, extra salt, food colorings, and/or whey or sugar. As a result, many flavors, colors, and textures of processed cheese exist.
Pasteurized process cheese, which is made from one or more cheeses (excluding certain cheeses such as cream cheese and cottage cheese but including American cheese), and which may contain one or more specified "optional ingredients" (includes both dairy and nondairy items). Moisture not more than 41%; fat in the solids, not less than 49%.
Pasteurized process cheese food, which is made from not less than 51% by final weight of one or more "optional cheese ingredients" (similar to the cheeses available for Pasteurized process cheese), mixed with one or more "optional dairy ingredients" (milk, whey, etc.), and which may contain one or more specified "optional ingredients" (nondairy). Moisture must be <44%, and fat content >23%.
Ingredients: MILK, WATER, MILKFAT, WHEY, WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, MILK PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, ALGINATE, SODIUM CITRATE, APOCAROTENAL (COLOR), ANNATTO (COLOR), ENZYMES, CHEESE CULTURE.
There is a DIY recipe out there. You soften the cheese scraps with hot water, add gelatin (replaces the alginate) and then I think it is put thru the processor and hardened in the frig in a loaf pan. IIRC, you line the loaf pan w/plastic wrap and weight the entire thing while it cools.
It is just a way to stretch leftover cheese by about 1/3.
I have tried the Clancy’s brand sold in Aldi’s. It is ok. Can’t tell the difference. Mr.rl likes processed cheese food on a hamburger and in eggs. It makes a good, quick grilled cheese. I use it 1/2 & 1/2 with extra sharp White Cabot Cheddar in mac’m’cheese. I make dip w/the Clancy’s jarred quesa and any hot salsa I have around, including homemade. I also love aged Danish Blue.
Velveeta (or any processed cheese food) has its place and it doesn’t contain plastic.
Whatever they’ve put in V, it must also have been put in big maks because I belch them up immediately now ( used to have no problem at all with them). As for liberalism, we could deal with liberal ideas a lot better as a country if their proponents wouldn’t lie so much to us. This incessant lying has rotted out our entire social contract as well as any trust for the political process And it’s rendered our system of representative governance into a bad joke
