In honor of Father's Day, the pick for today's feature is my favorite of John Wayne's 1970s westerns. He plays tough grandfather "Big Jake" McCandles out to rescue his grandson(played by Wayne's real-life son Ethan) from nasty kidnapper Richard Boone. Maureen O'Hara plays Mrs. McCandles in her last film with the Duke.

Wayne and O’Hara did at least one other movie together. The one I’m thinking of was black and white (of course) and they were both very young. I think they married in that other movie, loosely based on Taming of The Shrew.

I saw it around 1973 with my girl friend who was later my wife.

It was a good movie and Richard Boone was a great villain. It did occur to me that every now and then, John Wayne was just a little too full of himself.

Still he was a great one.

Just watched McClintock yesterday.

One of my favorite John Wayne movies.

I became a fan of Maureen Ohara when I first saw At Swords Point.

The only actress that I think can pull off as strong a character as John Wayne.

John Wayne always plays the ultimate manly man character. Maureen Ohara is one of the few who can play a character of his EQUAL.

That’s a great movie. “I thought you was DAID!” “Not hardly!”

‘Listen up, if any thing happens.... Your fault, my fault, nobody’s fault: you die.’ Wayne to Boone.

Is this the one where The Duke physically abuses Maureen O’Hara?
