Girl scarred by pit bull attack asked to leave restaurant

JACKSON, Miss. —A 3-year-old girl who was attacked by pit bulls in April was asked to leave a Jackson restaurant because her scars scared customers, the girl's grandmother told 16 WAPT News.

"Does this face look scary to you?" accompanied a picture of Victoria Wilcher on the Facebook page Victoria's Victories, which documents the child's recovery from the attack at her grandfather's home in Simpson County. Authorities said one of Donald Mullins' dogs ripped open the back door and jumped on the girl. Two other dogs dragged her into the back yard and began mauling her, investigators said.

"The right side of her face is paralyzed. She's got a lot of surgeries to go through and she won't even look in the mirror anymore," said Victoria's grandmother, Kelly Mullins. "When we go to a store, she doesn't even want to get out (of the car). She's 3 years old and she's embarrassed about what she looks like. She's embarrassed and I hate it because she shouldn't be. It ain't her fault."

I have a problem with banning any domestic pet breed-as you said, keeping wild animals as pets is illegal, but there are pet wolves, mountain lions and other wild and protected animals in the yards of some out here who can afford to keep them under the radar.

I pointed out in an earlier post even my Husky is on the dangerous list, as were my other dogs. I don’t like Chihuahuas or most Terriers-they bite and yap, and could jump in a child’s face and cause serious damage-can’t we ban those, too?

If the banning breeds road is taken, maybe cats are next? I have one that weighs 20 pounds, and has big claws-he could be dangerous to a kid...

Better we should make owners responsible for keeping their animals on their own property, and not allowing them to interact with others unless supervised and under control...

Hey...I'm not one afraid of a dog breed.

I know... I agree with you - you were just courtesy pinged, is all...

Grew up on a farm in the country, am in the ‘burbs presently.

Then you oughta know better. Roll up into a farmyard and jump out of the truck and see how far you get with the dogs - pitbull or otherwise- unless the family calls them off... They'll tear you a new one if you don't belong there. Worse yet up here - Try rolling up on a mountain cabin and do the same.

Those lists are not entirely fact-they are the opinion du jour of insurers, cops, etc and change from time to time-less than 30 years ago Huskies, Mastiffs and Malamutes were not even on the lists, and Dobermans, German Shepherds and Rottweilers were at the top, not Pits and Chows.

Not the farms I’ve been on.

But this is the sort of ordinance that should be implemented locally, as fits the community.

It is most unwise to get out of your vehicle after entering someone’s driveway out here too-until the property owner comes out unless you are known to the dog-and sometimes the donkey or llama...

That's funny, because I have been in farmyards all over west of the Big Muddy, and a few east, and farm dogs everywhere I have been are always the same.

But this is the sort of ordinance that should be implemented locally, as fits the community.

Huh. Best get back to the Country, son, and get some red back on that neck. Next you'll be telling me a man can't own a truck that's too tall, or a car that's too fast, or a gun that has too many rounds... 'Unnecessary hazards'...

That's just a fact that any country boy knows. You just stay in your truck till somebody comes out to get you. That's why farm houses don't normally have doorbells. : )

That philosophy will only work in a city or town of some size-those of us who live in rural areas are here because we own responsibility for ourselves and don’t want or need a mommy to make rules for every little thing like many cities do...

There is no need for a doorbell-that is why dogs bark, and donkeys bray-and llamas will spit on you if you even open the window...

Trucks, cars and guns all act only under the control of man. Pit bulls are completely different. I’m fine with communities restricting the keeping of lions and tigers and bears as pets, too. Sure, some may be able to keep them without harm, but there was too much of a record of them causing problems and lots of communities have made their keeping illegal.

I’m not against all laws.

Indeed, the greater cheek by jowl people live, the more local rules are required. As I said, local laws should fit the local circumstances.

But the yahoos with pitbulls who end up killing toddler family members are ignorant and despicable, and I’m fine with laws that limit family members taking such chances with their offspring.

I think Pits and Am Staffs are great dogs.

Since you are of the opinion that it's bad owners that make these dogs do bad things, then would you be in favor of the death penalty for owners of these dogs that kill another person???

It’s liberal welfare pukes in the hood that all own pitts.

Most conservatives have enough brains to know better.

I’m a rootin tootin 2nd amendment backer.

I think kids should learn gun safety in school from the NRA.

Good day....

No they ain't. The tall pickup is a danger if the operator loses control... the fast car is a danger when the operator loses control... the pitbull is a danger if the operator loses control.

You want to see trouble? Try a pack of Malamutes in a melee. Try wading into that to break it up... any one of those would eat your silly little pitbull for lunch.

Pit bulls are living, breathing creatures who go about their business without direction 24x7.

And yeah, there’s a chance that vicious dogs from some of the other tougher breeds will be bred and acquired to fill the pit bull void.

But right now you can go into local pounds across the country and many people who want to adopt a dog can only find a pit bull, so that’s what they end up having to take home.

And that’s a shame.

Families are responsible for their offspring-it is not up to big brother to decide such details as what pets, guns, livestock or other such things people with kids should have. Many of my neighbors who have kids also have horses, donkeys, etc which can trample and kill even a careless adult by just rearing up and striking them.

I don’t see any of my neighbors leaving kids unattended with any animals, including dogs-they aren’t likely any smarter than a city dweller-just more used to animals and what they can do. If they do something stupid and something bad happens, then the fault is theirs, as are the consequences, such as a lawsuit-no nanny law required...
