Germany have a solid chance. My problem with Germany is that Bayern Munich, which has the most players on the national team, were recently humiliated by Real Madrid 0-4 in the Champions League semi-final.

Hopefully those players have rebounded, will be better prepared and have no nagging injuries. I am excited to see Klose and Müller working together. Klose going for goal record and Müller was last WC Golden Boot winner.

Germany can win it but won’t be easy.

England are unlikely to win the World Cup but they have a made a dubious contribution to World Cup culture by churning out, with alarming regularity, a succession of rather bad songs, which were usually optimistic ditties, which were followed by predictable disappointment once the tournament actually started.

Take this effort from 1970, which saw Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton & Co, singing merrily, just before England headed off to defend their title. Sadly, it all went wrong in the quarter-finals against West Germany. It would be 12 years before England would reach the World Cup Finals again.

Still, can't beat a bit of optimism can you?

When England finally returned to the World Cup big time in Spain 1982, they vowed that 'This Time' they would get it right. Things didn't quite go according to plan.

Kevin Keegan really seems to have taken his singing very seriously! Sadly injury kept him out of most of the tournament. He tried a pop career at one stage, with predictably disastrous results.

Incidentally, anyone who manages to sit through these England songs deserves at least the Victoria Cross. At least.

Most welcome. :)

It’s 1pm and I just realized I didn’t even have coffee, too excited, I forgot to eat!

Going to make up for that now, Big Time - LoL!

Have a good one!

This one isn't actually THAT bad (all things considered). Italia 90 proved to be an excellent World Cup for England until they lost to the Germans in the semi-finals on penalties.

This was the team of an ageing Shilton, Gary Lineker in his pomp, and of John Barnes, a man who would insist on rapping at the drop of an England cap. His 'rap' at the end of this song has haunted him to this day. He is often serenaded with it at football grounds across the country. He will never escape it.

For a generation in England, along with Pavarotti's 'Nessun Dorma' this song brings back memories of a campaign in which England came so near to the World Cup Final.

And, finally, to inflict no more agony upon the good World Cup loving people of this forum, we finish the England crooning with a song that caught the imagination in the build up to Euro 96. Yet again, England got so close, and yet again, they fell to the Germans....on penalties.

Ironically this song, with its easily chant-able 'Football's Coming Home' refrain proved to be very popular with the Germany team.

1996 - Three Lions

Two years later, the Lightning Seeds, Skinner and Baddiel, re-released 'Three Lions' with a World Cup version for France 98. Note the rather cheeky names on the shirts of the German fans at the end of the video (apart from 'Klinsmann')

Am intrigued as to who everyone on this thread is pulling for in the World Cup. I assume that, quite rightly, the vast majority here will be for the USA, but there might be a few rogues, like me, who are for other nations.

Brasil, being Brasil, and being at home, is the overwhelming favorite. For some reason I've always liked the Dutch, so go Holland! We, the USA, are going to have a very hard time making it out of the first round.

Great game but I think there’s something to think about when people live as they do but billions are being sunk into this spectacle.

Especially now, FIFA is being shown to be very corrupt. This has been going on for a number of years now.

One bit of trivia, if I’m not mistaken, the final match of the World Cup has always been won by the country located closer to the site of the tournament than their opponent. For that reason, I’m going to make my pick from South America and go with Uruguay. No one’s paying them much attention yet, but they’re solid, and if Suarez is healthy, he’s having one of those dream years and he will be hard to stop.

They're small-timers compared to the IOC.

Uruguay beat Brazil in the last final played in Brasil, way back in 1950.

USA

England, have cheered them on basically since my first World Cup, ‘86.

In general, there are about 6 other teams I can cheer on but don’t have a real allegiance.

"Uruguay beat Brazil in the last final played in Brasil, way back in 1950."

And the Brazilians still haven't gotten over it, even with the subsequent 5 championships (all won on foreign soil).
