While a boycott by the United States was suggested due to Germany’s National Socialist regime, it was not implemented as the President of the United States Olympic Committee, Avery Brundage, felt that politics should be kept separate from sport.[1] The other NOCs which threatened to boycott the Games for the same reason were the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and the Netherlands.[2] An alternative People’s Olympiad was planned to take place in Barcelona, Spain, but was cancelled at the last moment following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War after the athletes had already begun to arrive.[2] The civil war also meant that Spain’s NOC did not compete at the 1936 Games.[1] While no NOCs ended up boycotting the Games, a multinational Jewish-led boycott of the Games took place, with individual athletes refusing to take part.
The men’s basketball team won the gold medal.

No, technically it reads: "Coke it is."
So I forgive the translation.

how could they have not known what the future would be.Yeah, I was very impressed with the opening episodes of WINDS OF WAR because of the depiction of the clueless, if not innocent, Thirties. A lot of people did a lot of scrambling after that. "British philosophy" for example. I forget what it was called, but they had some kind of fascist thing going. I came across that one by accident. Of course, Charles Lindbergh got caught out, but most of them ducked out of the way. Everything changed in an instant.

My dad was in Europe just after high school by himself traveling - must have been just as Hitler was gaining power - I’m guessing around 1935?
He was in Denmark I think at a youth hostel and met up with a German boy and in conversation asked about this Hitler fellow. The German hushed him and looked around and said it was not safe to talk about him.

I know the pirate costume is just a coincidence but gee, how fitting.
The photo is kind of haunting to those of us living through this.

“Coke is it” was introduced in the early 1980s. Bill Cosby was their spokesman and this slogan was everywhere.

Oh yeah,
British Idealism. It's funny, there's still a lot of reticence and circumlocution that goes on, but I think you can get the picture.

I just remembered something that fits on this thread.
I have an old Life magazine full page ad for an engine oil brand dated a month before the Hindenburg disaster, I guess you can figure out what the full page image and sales pitch was bragging about.
