David Brockie, frontman for the Grammy nominated "extraterrestrial" metal band Gwar, died of an accidental heroin overdose in March, the Virginia State Medical Examiner's Office said on Tuesday.
Brockie, 50, who gained an international fan base performing as a 43bn-year-old alien vocalist for the satirical band, was found by his roommate on 23 March dead in his Richmond home.
Brockie died from "acute heroin toxicity and the manner of death is accident," Arkuie Williams, administrator of the medical examiner's office, said in an email.
US deaths from heroin have soared as prescription painkiller abusers turn to the drug because it is cheaper. Across the United States, the number of fatal opiate overdoses increased 45% from 2006 to 2010.
...Brockie helped found Gwar, billed on its website as "Earth's only openly extra-terrestrial rock band," in the 1980s with fellow art students at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Grammy nominated group gained a worldwide following for its mix of thrash metal, grotesque costumes and outrageous stage shows...

With the explosion of new heroin addicts in the US, a new element is emerging, that of drug resistant flesh eating bacteria, that very opportunistically take advantage of any contamination.
Yesterday, I saw a very disturbing picture of a female junkie missing about half her forearm. She was so addicted to heroin that she would pour alcohol and Bactine in her arm, then wrap it up, so she could buy more heroin.
She lost the arm, so far.
Many types of bacteria can cause necrotizing fasciitis, for example: Group A streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes), Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens, Bacteroides fragilis, and Aeromonas hydrophila.

Drugs never kill anyone. Legalize them all. Alcohol is bad enough and I have seen the problem close up in my extended family. Drugs further damage society. At least this guy checked out. I would not want him to be anyone’s example of someone to admire.
