A 43-year-old Griffin police officer and father of seven was shot and killed outside of a Waffle House early this morning while working an off-duty security job in full uniform, authorities said.
Three suspects are in custody after the shooting death of Officer Kevin Jordan, an ex-Marine who had been with the Griffin Police Department for four years and often worked security at the restaurant on weekend nights, police spokesman Mike Richardson said.
The altercation began when two men and a woman who allegedly caused a disturbance at a Waffle House on U.S. 19 were asked to leave the restaurant around 2:20 a.m. Saturday, Richardson said. A fight broke out after Jordan got them outside and tried to handcuff 28-year-old Chantell Mixon, he said.
Jordan was on the ground trying to restrain Mixon when another man shot him at least three times in the back, and one of the bullets cut through Jordans bulletproof vest, Richardson said. Police identified the suspected gunman as 30-year-old Michael D. Bowman.
Jordans brother, Raymond Jordan, was in the parking lot when the gunfire erupted and shot Bowman, Richardson said. The brother is a civilian who had a permit to carry a gun and was at the restaurant to visit Jordan, police said.

When bars empty at 2am, the drunks go sober up at all-night restaurants with coffee and breakfast. Sometimes the nascent bar brawls move to the restaurants.
So a black guy had a white woman down on the ground in a parking lot, a white guy came to her defense and shot the black guy, and the black guy’s brother (who was hanging around the area) shot the white guy?
Authorities: Griffin police officer shot, killed at Waffle House

Are you saying that Free Republic is an anti-cop website?
Is this the cop or what?
My assumption is that at a Waffle House, someone is armed. There was a recent story of a WH in Norcross getting robbed by a man with a pitchfork, and I was surprised he didn’t get shot. That was yet another previous WH story, patrons take out robber.
no it’truly’isn’t.
it’s an anti-bad cop website.
this isn’t a bad cop story. i agree with the above poster that we speak out when bad cop stories appear, and also when bad stuff happens to good cops. also when people post good stories about good cops, like the one just recently who saved a little dog on the median of a freeway the other day.
anyone can post either kinds of stories and i’m all for seeing more uplifting ones.
I think I saw that video advertised on late, late TV.
:)
“Who knew a Waffle House needed armed seucrity?”
^this^
WTF?
Yes, that is the cop.
GA FReeper ping. Be careful out there, folks. Ugly story.
Yeppers...BIG difference between corrupt 'thugcops' who gun down people's pets and 'accidentally' break into citizen's homes on a wild goose chase and officers gunned down in the line of duty.
Really?
Both of our local franchises are extremely tame places.
Egregious.
Amen.
It is indeed the victim.
Nothing good happens at Wawful House after midnight.
