My first car was a Belair, four door with the big six. It might have been rusty but I waxed and polished it just the same......
.....;
Oh yeah! And it was an education in many ways!
1961 Chevy BelAir. Bought it from a preacher’s wife, who literally only drove it on weekends. Straight six, with a two speed triple disc wet clutch. It was only running on four of the six cylinders when I bought it for fifty of the hardest earned dollars of my life.
Rebuilt the head and whooped a tune up on it. Ran like a champ. And there was enough room in the back seat for four buddies (and their dates).
Had a great time, but I don’t want to go back...
My first was also a BelAir four door, ‘57 black with white trim. It had a 283 V-8 engine with Powerglide transmission.
I had two Austin Healeys, but not as my first car. What year was yours?
Had it my senior year in HS in '76
I had one of those in college - not the SS :-(, but I got it up to an estimated 140 on bias plys with plugs in them (pegged the speedo past 125, kept gaining speed, then broke the speedo).
First car I drove was an old 1954 Willys Jeep, wasn’t allowed out of low gear, low drive. I was plowing out driveway at age 12. First car I owned was a 1963 Austin-Healy Sprite, not a “bug-eye”.
1969 Impala SS with a 427 and Muncie four speed. Paid $900 for it in 1977. Wish I had that car now as a collector car
I know of many kids like this.
Back in the day, we were chomping at the bit to get our learners permit. Then got our licenses ASAP.
I remember the day I got my license. It was an overcast slightly rainy day. About one or two hours after I got my license, I drove myself to work. Man, I felt HUGE.
There was something about having a car. It wasn't just FREEDOM, there was also the sense of personal responsibility. Maybe that's the whole issue with todays society. No desire for personal responsibility. No desire for advancement. Who needs freedom, if there is someone to take care of all your wants and needs?
That was an MGA 1600 MkII, 1962.
I also owned a ‘67 Austin Healey 3000 MKIII at one point as well.
A Pinto Squire, lol. They look sort of strange now. At least you had Charlie’s Angels to make it seem a little more stylish.
‘55 Nash Ambassador.
72 pontiac catalina passed everything but a gas pump but a a dollar a gallon who cared
New 1971 MG Midget. Orange but they called it Tangerine. $500 down and $76 per month. My Dad co-signed the loan. :-)
‘46 Chevy Deluxe coupe, after my dad drove it for 15 years, made the same year I was born. I got 10 more years of use out of it till it finally just fell apart. It was part of many “first’s” in my life.
1976 blue Pontiac Ventura. Four door. It was my moms. Eventually it died and was replaced by a two door candy apple red 84 Datsun.
‘59 VW Beetle. The running boards were rusted-out. Didn’t have the sun roof, unfortunately. If you remove the innards from the tailpipe exhaust tips, it makes the engine sound pretty cool.
