In many jurisdictions you can count yourself lucky if the police respond within an hour (or at all!) to a burglar alarm.
I guess it's different if there is a dog to shoot.

This 8-year-old dog was killed inside his own home (near Austin, TX) because the burglar alarm went off when the owner wasn't home.
