In fact advocating for mental health in these cases is a very slippery slope.

Absolutely! Diagnosis of mental illness can be politicized very quickly, especially under a `single payer’ medical system where doctors/psychologists become de facto agents for state security.
“Voted against Dear Leader Obama. you say? That’s mental illness defined. Turn in your guns now & prepare to submit to mental evaluation!”
Or children eager for a parent’s wealth, having their family member committed? At one time, declaring a person incompetent was too easy. Then the ACLU and goodness knows how many “advocates for the mentally ill” raised a stink. So you can’t just put Dad in the nuthouse, but now we have all sorts of crazies wandering around free, putting our lives and children’s lives in danger.
There has to be a halfway solution. What’s being done now (or not being done) isn’t working.
