There is an internet site called WatchMojo.com. It has numerous top ten videos - top 10 Queen songs, top 10 nominated actors who never won an oscar , top ten Marvel movies, etc. I like going there to see various top 10 lists and such.
Yesterday while browsing through it, they had a Top 10 U.S. Presidents. I watched it to see if I would be disappointed and to no surprise, I was. Why?
Two things. One - President Reagan was not in their top 10. They had one term James Polk in there - #8 I believe - but no Reagan. The top 3 were #1 Lincoln, #2 FDR, #3 Washington. Second thing - when talking about FDR, they repeat the propaganda that FDR's government intervention and policies ended the Great Depression.
I may still go there from time to time, but it is disheartening to see the statists take over everything.
Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan tied for first
The next 17 tied for second.
The next 23 tied for third
Jimmie Carter came in fourth
Barack Insane Odumbo came in fifth.
That was supposed to be the point of the film and book High Fidelity -- that guys rate things from 1 to 10 as a way of thinking that we've imposed order on the disorder that is life.
If forced to rate the presidents, I'd put Washington at number one. I can understand their rating Lincoln and FDR highly. It's more a matter of our making it through devastating crises that could have destroyed the country or turned it into a dictatorship, though, than anything else. Reagan would certainly have to be in the top ten.
Over the years, have seen many top ten presidents lists.
Generally, the top three are George, Abe and Franklin.
Which order depends on the poll. IMO these three had the greatest effect on this country. People are free to argue the merits or demerits of those effects. But one cannot deny that the presidencies of these men drastically altered the course of American History. JMO
I agree. Each of those men changed the course of this nation. But it would be nice for those in charge of the poll to be somewhat honest - I know, wishful thinking - and say that FDR’s policies established a permanent welfare class in America and a change of thinking that government needs to do things for the welfare of the citizens, thus screwing up this nation for the last 70-80 years.
