Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 21, 2014-- toponym

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

toponym [top-uh-nim]

hear it pronounced

noun

1. a place name.
2. a name derived from the name of a place.

Origin: 1890–95; top- + -onym, or by back formation from toponomy

From Wordsmith.org:

Once upon a time, a person's name was his complete identification and address. It could comprise his given name, profession, father or mother's name, a personal trait, and even the name of his village. That was because where one lived defined a person as much as anything else. The place of origin often turned into a generic term for some personal characteristic.

The English language is replete with such expressions where the name of a place has become associated with a particular quality, such as laconic (using few words) from Laconia in ancient Greece or bohemian (unconventional) from Bohemia in the Czech Republic. There are hundreds of toponyms -- words derived from the names of places.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Students are invited to use an example of a toponym instead of the word “toponym” itself, if you prefer.

The scammers are everywhere, trying to take advantage of the good nature of people. I even saw beggars in nice clothes the parking lot of the grocery store in the nearest town of 900, and one said bitch under his breath when I ignored him and walked by. The bastard probably makes more money begging than I do busting my ass whenever I’m lucky enough to have work...

We have two or three sign holders-will work for food-at both the carpool parking lots out here in BFE. And if you offer them work, they say they don’t do that and ask if you will give them $5 or $10 instead...

I have watched many episodes of "Intervention" on tv and that guy was most likely a druggie - they come up with all sorts of ways to get money and a gift card is just like cash - he could buy things and return them for cash.

One episode that just happened to replay late last night had a 20 something heroin addict draining the resources of her terminally ill grandfather. He would even tell her he didn't have any more money and she would claim she was going to court and would be arrested if he didn't help her. She lied to his face- it was disgusting

That’s horrible. I saw the mgr talking to him when I was leaving. I figured they would not tolerate it in the store.

The only thing worse than adults begging for money is when they bring out the kids to harass you in parking lots and at intersections to underwrite their little programs. I asked one mom “What are you teaching these girls to do? To beg people for money? Wouldn’t it be better to teach them to provide a service that people would pay for? So they could earn money for their extracurriculars? With my children, if we couldn’t afford it, we DIDN’T DO IT! Why do you think strangers should pay their way? She glared at me and had zero comeback.

I’ve had the same harangue. Falls church HS band/chorus, begging door to door. I paid tuition AND for all the extracurruculars! Sell something, have a bake sale, or a car wash!

Teach them to earn money, not beg for it! I know I’m preaching to the choir here but sometimes I need reminders that I’m not the unreasonable one.

Calling the ex-First Lady Hillary Rotten Clinton is an apropos toponym.

In Yiddish we describe someone or something stupid as the “Wisdom of Chelm.” Chelm was a town noted for fools (more like illogical logic).

I love hummus! I’m going to assume your son tried it at school and not in your home originally?

Although “Hillary Rotten Clinton” is apropos, it is not based on the name of a place, and therefore not a toponym. I’ve been calling her “Hillary Benghazi Clinton” to remind everyone that she was Secretary of State when that debacle occurred.
