Every dog I've had has been homeless and not the best candidate for an easy placement. A dog chooses me, not the other way around.
My current dog is the best companion. Because he spent part of his life as an orphan, he learned to behave perfectly if he wanted to stay in someone's house. He knows how to greet people and charm them. On our many walks, he's the ultimate exercise equipment. He's leashed, but has a mind of his own and sets the pace, and has to be held back from breaking lose to enjoy a chipmunk (or whatever critter) dinner.
4 dogs 4 cats Last one found in a dumpster by my son. They all live and play on > 10 acres. Mostly wooded. The cats hang by the house. The big dogs play in the woods
