It turns out that support page name-checking the Surface Pro 3 wasn't a typo after all. On Tuesday, Microsoft announced the all-new Surface Pro 3, but this version is more than a mere spec boost over the Surface Pro 2: It's a whole new entry in the Surface lineup, and one designed "to replace your laptop."
The Surface Pro 3 blends full Core i7 powerSurface head Panos Panay calls it "the thinnest Core product ever created," designed in close conjunction with Intelwith true tablet sleekness, sheer screen size aside. The Surface Pro 3 measures in at a mere 0.35-inch thick without a keyboard cover, just a hair thicker than the iPad Air's 0.29-inch frame and far less than the MacBook Air's 0.68-inch apex.
Panay drove the point home by weighing the Surface Pro 3again, sans coverand a MacBook Air side-by-side on a scale.
The device still isn't fanlessthe new Haswell Core processors are much more energy efficient than their predecessors, but they still toss off heat, especially in the high-end Core i7 versions. But, Panay says, "we reinvented the fan to make it 30 percent more efficient than any fan in any product today, radially emit air so you never feel it or hear it or see it." The Surface Pro 3 also includes a perimeter vent, just like the Surface Pro 2.
The screen steals the show on this device, measuring in at 12-inches with an eye-popping 2160-by-1440-pixel resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio designed to mimic the paper notepad experience. Panay says the display boasts the highest contrast ratios in the industry.
"Just look at this screenit's gorgeous," bragged Panay.
Microsoft's also improved the Surface Pro 3's kickstand, with a multi-position kickstand. The tablet still has the Surface line's traditional 22-degree angle,

I cannot give up my MacBook Pro for a tablet.
I’ll wait for the model that includes the K5000M. Cool nonetheless!

Do you ask that question on Swordmaker's Apple threads?

“... Can replace your desktop - or a McDonald’s cash register!”
Won’t work for me either.
The screen is too large.
I am using an eight inch full windows tablet that I can have always with me.
I spoke with a guy who does 3-D modeling with Adobe products for 3-D printers. He raved about the Surface Pro 2's pen quality and accuracy. With the higher res screen, this must be a nice upgrade. To my knowledge, Apple has nothing equivalent.
I would LOVE a small travel laptop like this but unfortunately I’m stuck using a high end graphics card.
I think that’s the market Microsoft intends to capture — those who want to do serious office work WITH MOBILITY.
For the most part, tablets have been designed to be great for watching movies, reading books, playing games, browsing the web, and amazing for digital snacking with apps.
Most laptops OTOH are designed to help you type term papers, write letters, work on big applications, work on spreadsheets, browse the web, create content, make movies you name it.
In designing Surface, MS wanted to design a device that can marry the power of the full PC without compromising the sleek finish, elegant look and feel, light weight, thinness, and great battery life that folks expect from a tablet.
Whether this will sell briskly or not remains to be seen...
All I know is the BMW Group, The Coca-Cola Company and LVMH have seen the product and are ordering it for their company use...
At those prices? No thank you. I could get an Apple MacBook Air 4 GB/256 GB storage version for way less.
Because you need something that can do both (if that’s the case). But to be fair this is larger than an iPad with a 12” screen so it’s not exactly a tablet either.
This is really a laptop that is ultra-ultra mobile.
Funny to hear someone wanting to buy apple products because they are cheaper. Wow...how the times have turned.
Surface 2 pro isn’t a 12” screen. But point taken about needing to work on a bigger monitor and it has a dock or displayport to hook up multiple monitors.
My thoughts exactly. This is really for the pen support and portrait layout. It would be an amazing machine for taking notes and doing work. Plus you can use it as a very large tablet.
This must be a good product. The Apple fanbois seem upset.
LOL!
Well, at least the MacBook Air is an actually usable laptop. With the Surface Pro 3, I have to learn how to use the quirky Windows 8.x interface—kind of no thanks!
