Word For The Day, Tuesday May 20, 2014
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
hippogriff [hip-uh-grif]
-n
a fabulous creature resembling a griffin but having the body and hind parts of a horse.
[ 164555; earlier hippogryph, Latinized < Italian ippogrifo. See hippo-, griffin1 ]
la oruga [ohr-OO-gah]
-n
caterpillar
Hay una oruga en esa hoja.
Theres a caterpillar on that leaf.
All thoughts appreciated!
Y, a proposito, no hago las autofotitos.
“Soy un oruga, pero quiero estar una mariposa.”
Maybe GAME OF THRONES discriminates against hippogriffs. Only dragons need apply.
“El selfie” works for me!
I think we planted some mariposies in the garden.
Ay que lastima!
Cuanto tiempo tienes en Panama? Before I went to Colombia for the research trip, in college, we had a 6 week class on the area we were to be living, modismos etc. (modismo=slang). In Colombia when you run into someone you know there’s a barrage of modismos- que hubo? Que mas? Como ha ido? Que has hecho? That was the way you greeted someone back then. I suppose it could be completely different now. My only advice would be to get out and put yourself in as many different situations as often as you can, and listen always. Make a friend who can explain things to you. Living there is the best way to learn. Necessity is a great help in learning language!
Was today Harry Potter day and I missed it?
Not that i’m aware of.
