The police deal with a very different crowd than you or I do, so they have to respond differently. To you or I, it’s none of our business what somebody else puts in their mouth. To the police, they may be dealing with a drug addict who is either planning to smuggle something to somebody on the inside or take some illegal substance.
Unless you deal with addicts all the time, you’re hardly in a place to judge them.
Thanks for a perfect explanation of the problem. Since LEO’s deal with criminals, everyone has to be treated as if they are a criminal. To keep us all safe of course. Throw them all to the ground, beat them senseless, shoot them if they resist. Show them who’s in charge.
Much of what the police do these days is unlawful, summary actions executed without due process. Police leadership, politicians, prosecutors, and we the people have allowed and encouraged this behavior in the name of law and order. It’s time for it to stop.
She was in a holding area waiting to make a court appearance on a warrant for failure to appear for a domestic relations case (domestic violence perhaps?). The information that she had a warrant means that she had been arrested on a prior occasion and that she was supposed to appear in court, and she failed to appear. She can hardly advance an excuse at this time that she didn't know she was in custody. It would be helpful if we knew how long she was in the holding area before she took the pill. Did she sit down and immediately start taking some medication before her property could be inventoried? Because a person in custody cannot take medication unless it is administered by someone from the jail medical staff.
An officer told her to spit it out, and she said she couldn't, meaning she couldn't because she "had already swallowed the other pills." Ok, WHAT other pills? The article doesn't say if they were antibiotic or several Tylenol with codeine. This would certainly be relevant wouldn't it?
She was taken to a local hospital and treated and released. Released to where? Was she transported to the jail? Was she released to go home? If so, what happened to the charge she showed up for court on?
Gaps.

You are a drug addict.
There, now I can treat you any way I like and NO ONE can question it. You know, 'cuz they don't deal with addicts like you all the time....

As someone who deals with drug addicts pretty consistanly, I assure you that this is not how one deals with someone who ingests drugs or any foregin object. NO policy any where would support this sort of treatment.
Wanna know what happens when this sort of thing occurs? Ambulance is called and the swallower is transported to ER.
