We’re growing only the small tomato varieties. Last year, our big tomatoes didn’t do well (probably because of the heat.)
On another subject, I observed the first dead armadillo on the highway today. I thought the cold from last winter might have killed them off but no luck.
Time to get out the 2 X 6 boards and coon traps. A couple years ago, I nailed eight of these critters in one summer.
A Texas buddy remarked they are “good eating.” I don’t know if he was kidding but I’ll stick with more recognizable fare.
Armadillos carry tuberculosis IIRC. Be careful with the dead bodies.
We haven’t seen any armadillo around here yet. Just the regular possums, coons, moles, rabbits, and bushy tailed rodents.
I'm listening to an audiobook by Gary Paulsen named "Woods Runner." (He wrote a nature-based series for young readers.) He writes about a young teen survivalist during the Revolutionary War. The kid rescued his family from the Brits/Indians and tried to get his father to put on weight after having been starved as a hostage. He shot large male coons and roasted the meat in chunks--lots of fat. People preferred bear and coon over deer because the deer was tough, stringy and often wormy.
An old buddy from Trinidad told us that armadillo is delicious when properly prepared. He eats goat, too.
My gustatory adventures ended with octopus. It's like something manufactured by B.F.Goodrich.
