A Chihuahua was rescued from a roadway median on Interstate Highway 680 in Walnut Creek Friday.
The California Highway Patrol is being lauded for its efforts in rescuing a Chihuahua off the I-680 freeway Friday.
The Contra Costa CHP posted a photo of the rescue on Twitter saying:
"This little dog needed some help off I-680 freeway today. We're glad he's safe."
Many Twitter users thanked the CHP for saving the small dog. Others wondered where it had shown up from.
On Saturday, the CHP said in a tweet that the Contra Costa Animal Control in Martinez, California, had taken the puppy into their care.
The rescue picture showed the Chihuahua perched on a roadway median on Interstate
SPCA Rescues 20 Pets From Pacific Grove Hoarder Home CHP officer John Fransen said Saturday that a CHP officer spotted the small dog on the highway's concrete center divider around 6 p.m. while driving south on Highway 680 near the North Main Street overpass.
The officer came out of his car and used a protein bar to coax the Chihuahua toward him and was able to pick up the dog.
Although Fransen said he didn't know how the dog ended up on the freeway, he said, it's likely that someone left the animal there.
"As sad as it sounds, it actually happens pretty often," he said.
Since Friday night, there have been several offers from the public to adopt the dog, the officer said.

In before somebody says they used the dog for target practice later.
Dog survived the encounter?
Damn!
Football.
(Soccer to us. It is californexico after all.)
Every now and then, we encounter someone with a hart of Gold. Truly Outstanding work, keep the trust and protect and defend.
Someone had to put that dog there. Kinda like a turtle on a fence post.
CHP tends to be more professional than local PD. Part of it is better selection criteria, part of it is better training, and part of it is they usually deal with a higher class of criminals...
Because it is so small, did they use .22shorts?
They should check if the dog is micro chipped.
Either someone tossed the dog out, or it got lost.
(Think ditzy person driving convertible with top down and pocketbook fashion accessory dog.)
He may have been trying to coax it with some treats, but you can be damn sure he was watching his throat!
I shall name him “Ponch”.
Dog shootings are so famously reviled that I think the cops JUMPED on this story, specifically to generate an “awwww, nice cops”-story.
This has PR written all over it.
Ain’t buying the sincerity, sorry.
Still, you have to admit it’s nice when a dog doesn’t get shot, right?
Yes —I’m a huuuuge dog lover.
Good post.
Another dog saved by the CHP, hence his name. Adopted last year to a nice family.

Some idiot put that little dog there. What an SOB. Thankfully a cop with a heart showed up. I hope this little dog finds a loving home.
