I built a nice AR15 and have a piston kit on it. I also have a CMMG piston kit .22lr kit so I can shoot .22lr or 5.56. The rifle comes apart easily into two small pieces. IMHO it beats a Ruger 1022 for one main reason, it can shoot two different calibers with minimal effort.

The 3 weapons weigh about 20 lbs,add 30 lbs for ammo.So I’m out the door with 50lb load.I’ve had to handle double that in the past.

Interesting my go to field gun is a savage 24 in 22magnum over 20ga. I've also got a Savage, Valmet built, with interchangable 12ga, 16ga, and 20ga over and unders.

As regards hunting, I imagine in a real collapse the game that requires more than 22LR will be hunted to near extinction in a short time. We'll all be scrounging for squirrels, rabbits and the like.

I don't think there are that many capable hunters. I imagine in a real collapse the cities will be full of parasites waiting for the government to finally feed them, and predators taking from those who have only a little. The idea of finding food that has not passed through a grocery store or warehouse will not occur to most people. I expect big game (larger than a bunny) hunting to double in a collapse, but no more than that.

The problem with a .22 is that it is not an effective self defense weapon.

If you don't live past the first 72hrs you're not going squirrel hunting.

In all cases start with an effective combat carbine, add shotgun, handgun then .22.

I'll second that! A .308 is a fine hunting rifle and it'll take down a human target from a good distance also.

Do have to say, I don't think there's any one TRUE rifle that fits all scenario's. I like my .308 for hunting. My AR-15 is less a hunting and more a "sport" gun. Nothing beats a good 'ol 12 gauge for home defense (albeit they get kinda messy) coupled with a reliable 9mm or 45ACP.

If I had to choose my "bug out" kit I'd take my Remington 700, my Remington 870 Express (modified) and my HnK USP 9mm. The three cover far, mid-range and close threats.

I'm not limited to just one, but iff'n I were... it would be my Ruger 10-22 backed up by my five figured amount of ammo needed to feed it.

I might have caused the recent shortage of .22 LR.

I would rather have a 10mm Delta Elite for self defense but a .22LR high velocity out of a rifle barrel would probably beat any pistol caliber less than a 9mm Luger.

A Ruger 10/22 with a 30 round magazine would be perfectly good for self defense.
