MAN STUFF: 100 Things A Real Man Doesn’t Do
Clash Daily ^ | 2 May 2014 | Chad Howse Fitness

What is a man? Biologically we know he has a braciole, balls, and hair under his arms. But what makes a real man? Our society is filled with men who aren’t real men. It’s also filled with guys like you and I, who aspire real men, but we don’t always know what that entails.

To identify what a real man is, we’ll look at what he isn’t.

1.A real man doesn’t whine.

2.A real man doesn’t worry about that which he can’t control.

3.A real man doesn’t fear the loss of love. He’s secure in his relationships.

4.A real man doesn’t wish he was walking in another man’s shoes.

5.A real man doesn’t watch more than an hour of TV on average everyday.

A real woman doesn’t do any of those things either.

I think the rule could go by averages. Thus a real man watches only two to three games on TV a week, depending on the sport.

I’m a huge basketball fan, I have a sports blog, and I’m a retiree. I watch a lot of games during the season. And how about other retirees who are fans of other sports. Do you think they watch just three games a week? I would bet many watch every game their team plays during the season. But so what? It’s like saying a real man should only go fishing three times a week. Whose business is it what someone does with their time? The thread is a joke.

Of course the thread’s a joke, and nobody begrudges the ways (within laws and ethics) that retirees spend their time.

Think of the dad raising a young family, or a young guy yet to get his career going. Then too much sports can crowd out either social obligations or the further enrichment of the mind or whatever.

My eyebrows will look like Groucho Marx if they don’t get trimmed.
And lets not even talk about ear hair.

Oh, I’m not arguing men with families don’t have obligations. Or grampas like me. I love my grandchildren, and I have a very firm sense of what I want to pass on to them. Neither stepson is into sports much, and I’m going to make sure my grandkids have a little knowledge of how to play certain sports...if they’re interested. Sports and a few other things their parents might not be capable or able to teach them (music, history, etc.)

A real man doesn’t give a rat’s ass what some scribe somewhere thinks about being a real man.

My own view is that real men watch sports.

Seriously? Because I think it's rather lame if done on a frequent basis. There's nothing wrong with the occasional ballgame on a weekend, especially if it's nasty weather outside and nothing to do in the yard.

I know some men who actually get emotionally invested and get upset if their "home team" gets knocked out of the playoffs or loses a big game. I find that really pathetic - what are they, some 9-year-old kid?

You just want to smack them and tell them to grow up. And what's with wearing jerseys and other paraphernalia emblazoned with the logo of your home town team? I don't find that very manly at all.

A real man is Chuck Norris.

Chuck Norris doesn't need a List, because he IS The List. In fact The List periodically checks with Chuck just to make sure that he's still correct.

No real man refers to some list to see if he's a real man. He simply refers to Chuck, though even the realest of real men could never be as real as Chuck, but simply a faded copy.

However, we can all aspire, futile as the effort may be. Still sometime the reward is in the quest, even if the quest can never be achieved.

I had a friend who once injured himself by becoming overly-demonstrative while watching WOMEN’S GOLF!

(No,he did not have any personal connection to any of the contestants).

I’m not a big sports watcher other than maybe Iowa Hawkeye football. What I like more than anything else is to be out working some afternoon with the Cardinal game on AM radio. That’s about as pure man heaven as it gets.

That’s sort of meant as a joke. The whole idea of publishing a list of things “real men” do is kind of humorous to me. So what do you do for fun?

I find the list puzzling as well. I mean, I basically agree with them but once you get past #25, they start to get redundant. I think they had to really stretch to get to the full 100 things.

So what do I like to do for fun? Well I like baking, shopping, designing drapes (I'm trying to refer to them as "window treatments") and I also collect shoes. None of that stuff made the list of things real men don't do so I believe I'm still a man in good standing.

Here’s my point...everybody has their own things they like to do for fun. To tell someone what they do in their spare time (as long as it’s legal) is manly or unmanly seems a bit repressive to me.

True enough. I also don’t see many lists out there of what is “womanly” or “unwomanly”. I guess that would be sexist.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been saying this for decades, and now I have visible proof. I asked Mrs. Dartman to look at it and she just said, "Hmmmf".
