Trouble with the firing squad is that it produces blood and mess. A gallows, on the other hand, is quick, clean and presents an opportunity to sing hymns before the trap door is sprung, thereby giving the ACLU and the anti-capital punishment crowd a double dose of two of the things they hate most.

Public hanging, justice administered should be open. Out side of the old Essex County Jail in Newburyport, Ma is the Hanging Tree.
The tree is outside of the walls of the Jail and the public was invited to witness justice administered. A good teaching moment for the youth of the community.
