British actor Bob Hoskins, whose varied career ranged from "Mona Lisa" to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" has died aged 71.

A family statement released Wednesday by agent Clair Dobbs said Hoskins died in a hospital after a bout of pneumonia.

His wife Linda and children Alex, Sarah, Rosa and Jack, said: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Bob."

A versatile character actor capable of menace, poignancy and Cockney charm, Hoskins appeared in some of the most acclaimed British films of the past few decades, including gangster classic "The Long Good Friday."

In 2012 Hoskins announced that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and was retiring from acting.

I first saw him in the UK TV series “Flickers” about the early days of movie making. Great actor, he’ll be missed.

R.I.P., Bob...you shall be missed, unlike some actors.

I remember first seeing him in a Masterpiece Theater piece called "Flickers". Frances de la Tour was also in it. It was about the beginning of film production in England and I had found it quite enjoyable at the time. Always liked Bob Hoskins.

The scene in “Heart Condition” where his boss tells him what he can’t say is something else.

I always enjoyed him. I just took a look at his profile at IMDB and he worked A LOT. Averaged 3-4 films a years for at least 25 years.

One of the first movies I remember seeing him in was “Mona Lisa” where he drove a white MK2 Jaguar. Weird movie, but he was good in it.

Actually it isn’t an AMerican film, in fact they couldn’t get a studio in HOllywood interested in the idea.

One of the best British films ever made, regarded with Get Carter as the two best British gangster films of all time. And one of my fav films ever.

He was Nitkita Kruschev in ‘Enemy at the Gates’.

And Lavrenti Beria in 'The Inner Circle'.

Hoskins shot to fame in Britain in 1978 due to his starring role in the brilliant and surreal BBC musical drama ‘Pennies From Heaven’, written by the brilliant if controversial playwright Dennis Potter:

‘Pennies From Heaven is a 1978 BBC musical drama serial written by Dennis Potter. The title is taken from the song “Pennies from Heaven” written by Johnny Burke and Arthur Johnston. It was one of several Potter serials (another being The Singing Detective) to mix the reality of the drama with a dark fantasy content, and the earliest of his works where the characters burst into extended miming to popular songs.’

On the Move: How Bob Hoskins helped adults learn to read

‘British actor Bob Hoskins, who died aged 71, was the star of several big-screen blockbusters.

But his early role in a BBC adult education series made a different kind of impact, writes Jon Kelly.’
